Souzuke Yamazaki x reader - for @notsochillnerd
In truth, no one truly knows who broke up with whom. Some days, a part of you still wonders if Sousuke is out there somewhere, thoroughly convinced you two are still dating. Just... very long distance.
-
"Sousuke."
He looks even more surprised than you feel, and that says something.
"I'm supposed to help plan the wedding," he explains, brows furrowed and eyes downcast in his signature look. "You?"
"Why are you planning the wedding?" You ask. "Isn't that supposed to be Rin's job?"
"He's in Australia."
"Ah," you nod. "Lucky him."
Sousuke snorts under his breath. You send him a glare, but the corners of your mouth are twitching. You're both too familiar with your respective friends not to know this is going to be an ordeal.
-
"I do think the lemon pie is the best," Gou points out for the hundredth time an hour or so later, tapping the fork against her lower lip. "But I just don't see myself as a lemon pie bride. It's not classy enough, don't you think?"
Truthfully, you disagree on all points. The chocolate cake tastes ten times better, and if you had to describe Gou in a taste, you'd surely pick something refreshing, like a lemon. And her husband... well, he needs some getting used to. Like a lemon.
"Why not have two?" Sousuke offers, draped over his chair like he's going to fall asleep any second. He's never been a sweet tooth, like you, and he has to follow a certain diet with his profession, you're sure, but he tried them all. "The lemon pie for the taste, and the..." he waves his hand around. "The chocolate one for presentation?"
"That's an excellent idea," Gou claps her hands. "Rin would never have thought of something like that."
"Thanks," you hiss in his direction when Gou turns away to make a call.
"What?" He shrugs. "I know I have to make sure you get your daily dose of chocolate."
You roll your eyes. Still, your mouth curls into a little smile when he's not looking.
-
"I was thinking a bright orange for bridesmaid dresses," Gou explains as you follow her. The week hasn't been kind to you so far, and you're nursing the coffee you brought with you like it could change that.
"Orange?" You ask. You imagine yourself like a buoy, or a traffic cone. "What kind?"
"Oh, burnt," she smiles. "Like Momotaro's hair? I thought about going a deeper red, to match Seijuro's hair, or mine, but that would just wash us out, I think."
"Good choice," a deeper voice rumbles on your left. You freeze, halt, and look up to find Souzuke nursing a similar cup of coffee.
"Short nights?" You ask. He nods. When Gou leaves with the shop assistant, Souzuke slides you a chocolate bar.
"What are you doing here?" You ask, ripping the packaging open.
"Delivering chocolate?"
You roll your eyes. "Sure. What else?"
"I'm supposed to meet Seijuro at the other end of the store and help him find a suit. And make sure he doesn't walk off and look at Gou before their wedding day."
"And why are you here, then?"
"First," Souzuke leans back and pops his pinky for show. "Seijuro is always late. And second..." His ring finger follows. "I wanted to talk to you."
"About what?"
"Nothing," he takes a sip of coffee. "I like talking to you."
You fluster. "Thanks. I... uh... like talking to you, too."
"Great." He smiles.
For a moment, the past rests beneath your feet like mere pebbles. Nothing to trip over. Then he clears his throat.
"Did Gou tell you about the dance lessons?"
"Yes," you nod.
"And?"
"And what?"
"Are you going as well?"
"No," you laugh. "Remember? I was part of the dance club in High school."
"Right." He sighs whistfully. "And here I was hoping I could get a dance in with you."
-
It takes you a week before you gather the courage to shoot your shot.
The text message is short and simple.
"If you'd like some private dance lessons on the side, you know where to find me."
He rings the doorbell not even an hour later.
-
"Care for a dance?" Souzuke asks, offering you his hand. You laugh and let him pull you up.
"The dress suits you well, by the way," he whispers into your ear as he leads you to the dance floor. "Couldn't take my eyes off you during the ceremony."
"Don't tell the bride."
"There was a bride?"
Souzuke dances clumsily, but earnestly. He tries to overcome his mistakes, where he can, and learn from the ones he still makes.
Maybe, this too will end. But you like to believe that this time, he's here to stay.
"Oh," he stops, holding you close. "We need to get back to the table."
"What?" You blink. "Why?"
"There's only one piece of chocolate cake left and it's calling your name. Can't you hear?"
