on march 16th, 1988, then president of iraq, saddam hussein, attacked the kurdish town of halabja with chemical weapons, namely mustard gas and nerve agents. thousands of kurds succumbed to the gas and perished, with several thousand more sustaining serious injuries. the chemical attack remains the largest chemical weapons attack against a civilian population in history.

to this day, the people of halabja still deal with various health issues as a result of the attack. cancer, respiratory issues, and birth defects are more prevalent in halabja than any other region in kurdistan.

on march 16th, 1988, over 5,000 kurdish children and adults were killed and 10,000 were injured when then president of iraq, saddam hussein, attacked the town of helebce (halabja) with chemicals weapons, including mustard gas and nerve agents. thousands of people died later that year from complications and diseases from the attack.

the genocidal massacre against kurds in helebce still remains the largest chemical weapon attack directed against a civilian-populated area in history.
