A twelve month personal project came to an unexpected and shocking conclusion today. . . . I’ve been photographing the same three trees since early April last year, that’s just a few days after the UK went into the first Covid lockdown. The idea was to photograph and record each location as the seasons changed. Obviously, I’ve been hoping we’d get some snow so I could wrap the project up in a tidy white parcel. That (little bit of) snow arrived today, so I headed out to grab the last frame of each tree. However, when I arrived at my first location I was met with a scene of almost total devastation - the beech wood had been entirely cut down by the foresters. Two of my three trees had been in this wood and only one tree was left standing - thankfully, one of mine. (You can see that set in a following post.) I live in the country and I know forestry is still a commercial operation here (just), but it is always still a massive shock when you find hundreds of trees felled, seemingly in an instant, soon to be fence posts, flat-pack furniture or maybe, simply firewood. I have to be an optimist and so I’m thinking that, despite this pandemic, life goes on and will continue to do so. We will get through this.
