War was the easy part. It’s coming back home that’ll kill you. At least, that’s how Lucius feels right about now. He’s only just recently come back from overseas and getting accustomed to the hustle and bustle of the United States is strange enough. None of it is made easy by the fact that he and one of his fellow soldiers just finished dropping bad news on a newly widowed woman: her husband’s dead. He was a good man and it was an honor to fight beside him, but that doesn’t make the news any easier to hear.

While his partner is doing his best to comfort the woman, Lucius goes outside for a breath of air. He’s starting to feel that caged, claustrophobic sensation tighten in his chest. Too much emotion in that room. Can’t take it. But he’s not alone--a young girl, maybe seventeen, eighteen--is out there with him. The daughter. Josie. He recognizes her from a picture Sheppard used to carry around with him.

Lucius nods at the young girl and tries, “Hey...how’re y’ holding up?” Probably not well. She was just told her father is dead. She’s not okay. But he can’t think of anything else to say.
