darling
They’ve spent hours in Gordon Edgley’s library today. Mostly in silence, they occasionally exchange words as she goes about her studies. She is fully occupying the sofa, books and pens sitting at either side and the table covered in research materials, scans. Various charts that will be relevant to her work. But at some point she stopped paying attention to them, and now finally, she speaks with purpose. She turns her head to where he’s draped himself across an armchair.
“Skulduggery.”
He lifts his chin slightly to indicate that he’s listening. “Mm.”
“I feel something really serious for you, you know? Proper love, and all that.”
His smile is genuinely affectionate, and he reaches across to take her hand in his and rub circles into her skin with his thumb. He still doesn’t look up from his book. “You’re a darling.”
Saoirse gently squeezes his hand. “I think it’s time we broke up.”
“What?” Skulduggery straightens out, swings his legs off the arm of the chair to properly set his feet down. Holds her hand tightly and shuts the book, but with a finger still in there to mark his place. “Where’s this coming from?”
Her eyes are wide and clear. It seems she’s been thinking on this for a while, and it’s such a shock. “This isn’t really going anywhere. Not that you’re not lovely–”
“I am lovely,” Skulduggery agrees, leaning forward, hovering above her lap. “And you’re lovely! We’re very lovely, you and me, together.”
Saoirse sighs. “We are. But I’m–”
“So what’s the matter?”
“I’d like to tell you, if you’ll stop interrupting me.”
Skulduggery keeps his mouth shut and awaits her explanation. Saoirse unravels her hand from his and clasps it with her other just under her chin. She squints into the middle distance, considering. “I feel as if we were long married. Still caring for one another, but with no spark. And I think,” she takes a pause and a breath, and looks at him with something of a cringe, “I think you’re in love with Valkyrie.”
He reels back hard, and the momentum of coming forward again puts him up on his feet. He takes a number of steps away. Saoirse’s cringe deepens, her face all scrunched up as she shakes her head and waves her hands.
“No, no,” she says hurriedly, not that he’s said anything yet. “It’s not a judgement, it’s an observation, and as long as it’s there I just think we should–”
“I love you, Saoirse,” Skulduggery says firmly, totally rigid. At his sides, both hands balled into fists. “I do.”
“You’ve been a great boyfriend,” she says in a soothing tone, pressing her palms against the air, almost certainly trying some vitakinetic sedative trick. “And I believe you when you say that. But you’re not in love with me.”
Affronted, he snaps, “You can dump me but you can’t talk like you know exactly what I feel.”
“That’s a part of it, a bit, though,” Saoirse goes on. “If we were really in love, really tuned-in, going somewhere, then I should know, shouldn’t I?”
“I suppose you should!”
“But I don’t.”
“No. Then maybe we shouldn’t be together.”
“That’s what I’m suggesting. But only romantically, because I do care for you. You’re my friend.”
“As you are mine!”
“So it’s business as usual.”
“Seems to be!”
“Alright.”
“Fine!”
Skulduggery remains standing out past the table, flushed red with slightly quivering hands. Saoirse doesn’t take her eyes off him, concerned that he may start crying or continue shouting, but in a minute his colour fades and soon he’s just frowning at her. A minute after that, he sweeps his hand through his hair and comes and sits back across the armchair. Scoops his book up off the floor and tries to find his place.
“My god, Saoirse,” he says smoothly. “You could have just said you’d like to end things, no need to be so dramatic about it.”
She does not know better than to press the matter. “Well, it’s true.”
He’s very cool about it, pretending to read. “What is?”
“That you’re...you know.”
“I don’t know.”
Now it is her turn to frown. “That you’re in love with Valkyrie!”
Skulduggery barely glances over his shoulder. “That’s ridiculous.”
“It’s not! I’m not even pointing it out as a bad thing, it’s okay to–”
“I’m sure it is,” he says, turning back a bit more now. “It must be very okay to feel that way about Valkyrie. But I for one do not.”
“So then you love me, like you said?”
Skulduggery nods to himself. “I did say.”
“Then why haven’t you kissed me yet?”
He puts the book down. Squints at her. “What.”
“Don’t you think this would be a good time to? Do you not want to prove how you feel for me, and definitely not for her?”
“But you just broke up with me.”
“And you’re not fighting to keep me?”
“Well no, I,” scoffs Skulduggery, “I’m– I am respecting your wishes.”
“I only dumped you for your sake! I told you I properly love you! Practically a dare to make love to me right now!”
“On Valkyrie’s sofa?”
Saoirse snaps her fingers and points at him, her eyebrows raised, lips thin but in a smug sort of “gotcha” smile. Skulduggery scrambles up again, turning his face away from her so she can’t see.
*
Tanith had been in just the other room and told everyone who would listen all about it, or such is Skulduggery’s understanding, but by the time Valkyrie returns at the end of the week he’s mostly blocked it all out. With luck, the version of events that reached her wasn’t complete.
“Heard about Valentine,” she says when she finds him in the garage.
“No you didn’t,” he says tactfully.
“If you say so.” Valkyrie smacks him on the shoulder and he rocks. “But I do appreciate when a man draws the line at fucking on his friend’s couch. You’re a darling.”
here’s the rough animatic no one asked for of Val and human!Skulduggery singing Moulin Rouge’s Elephant Love Medley i guess lmao??
skulduggery pleasant roleswap belongs to the incredible @electropath !!! god bless them!!!!
(screaming after him) i hope you know you’re raising my son you bitch
one of my favourite moments in the whole series is when valkyrie is standing before alt mevolent and thinks “skulduggery should show up any second now” and then alt vile comes in. love it. mwah.
in the roleswap leibniz dimension, the king of the darklands lets darquesse live and stomp upon the mortals on the condition that she do it in his unname. oftentimes she thinks perhaps death would be better than this servitude, but meeting skulduggery and learning of another version of herself is interesting enough to keep on truckin
hired this young man here to be my personal lighter. i dont even smoke
SO MU RS ABYSSINIA IS LEIBNIZ RS KING OF THE DARKLAND'S DAUGHTER AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA where is serafina in all this chaos
YEAH so, with the king of the darklands being successfully defeated in the rs primary dimension, abyssinia was never born. dimension x abyssinia is in the primary to scope the place out, groom it for taking over until such a time comes that they can get more than one person over there at a time, in general be a nasty piece of work, and to one day to have a child that will be the next vessel for the undying consciousness of the unnamed
in the primary she makes various uses of mevolent, vengeous, serpine and baby vile – but when not working with her, aside from vile, those guys are just like, high-achieving post-grad bullies. ive shown how the revenger’s club is just billy ray & pals in his dad’s basement, well. mevolent and co. are in the attic basically. since he’s swapped places with caisson, it sure does LOOK like he’s going to be a big threat but ultimately goes down sort of easily
but to get to serafina, the on-again-off-again girlfriend of young elemental prodigy mevolent, i imagine her as sort of a mafia princess, sometimes in cahoots with on-again-off-again bestie china (and HER on-again-off-again bestie eliza scorn, and the rest of the diablerie, who all smoke magic weed), while her siblings go around committing magic organised crime. except for damocles, who promises very sincerely that he’s being a good boy and studying his church books. magic church books.
@onelassieandherfandoms: some rs valdug if you feel like it? im parched for Content
it was early youtube, what else was a boy to do!!!
