Emery opened her eyes, and immediately regretted it.
Her whole body hurt, stung, like she had been covered in paper cuts and dipped in lemon juice. Beyond that there was a fatigue like nothing she had felt before. What happened?
Torture, her mind supplied, tossing some unpleasant images in as well. Just the memory makes the cuts sting more. She wondered briefly if she was the only one who had been released– and it was clear she had been released by the thin light coming through the windows over her head– and remembered that she had been barely hurt compared to some of the others. There would be plenty of time for regret later, so she tried to focus on something else for now. Positive thoughts.
Prioritizing had always been a strength of hers, one of the reasons she had been an easy choice for prefect, and even with what felt like fire racing over her skin, she attempted to put her thoughts in order. A small move forward and a sudden blossom of pain made it clear she wasn’t going anywhere soon. She couldn’t tell if there was any new blood on her shirt amidst all the stains, but it sure felt like it. If she couldn’t get help herself that leaves waiting for someone to find her as her only other option.
Even that small amount of thinking was starting to wear her out, and she could feel her thoughts becoming more and more unclear. Resisting the fog starting to take over her mind seemed futile and she knew she needed rest if she was going to be back on feet any time soon. Having no choice but to accept that, she gave up. After barely a minute of consciousness she fell back into her sleep with the hope that next time she wakes up, she’ll be somewhere else.
