Space Calendar 2017: It's Gonna Be Exciting

Space calendar for 2017 is gonna be full of exciting events. Although 2016 was a brilliant year for new science discoveries, we will be the witnesses of some spectacular happenings. We have prepared for you the short review of calendar events in 2017.

Great American Eclipse

The Solar Eclipse is a type of eclipse that occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. This Solar eclipse will be on the August 21h and it’s gonna be visible across the continental US. NASA have prepared accurate simulation of Moon shadow motion during the eclipse.

Quadrantids Meteor Shower

An asteroid debris of 2003 EH1 will cause the meteor shower already during the 3/4 January. The best view of this meteor shower gonna be from Northern Hemisphere. As the Moon will be partially illuminated, we won’t be able to see the most of the debris.

Grand Finale around Saturn

The Cassini spacecraft will finally enter into the atmosphere of Saturn, after 20 years of traveling. Estimated date of this entrance is 5th September. When Cassini arrives, scientists expect to collect data about rings and possible hidden planet content. This computer-generated view shows the view from the perspective of the Cassini spacecraft as it dives between the rings and Saturn’s cloud tops. Until the of 2017 we gonna have a real footage.

Juno explores Jupiter

NASA launched the Juno in 2011 and the spacecraft arrived at the Jupiter on July 4, 2016. The main mission goal is to understand origin and evolution of Jupiter, search for a solid core, and to exam water, and ammonia in deep atmosphere. In 2017 Juno should reveal what lies beneath the clouds and the chemical composition of the planet.

Launching The TESS

TESS is the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite. It is expected to discover thousands of exoplanets in orbit around the 200,000 bright stars. It is planned to survey for two years. During this time, scientists expect that TSS find 500 Earth-sized worlds.

China’s Mission to the Moon

China rapidly developing their lunar exploration. They plan to launch Chang’e 5 in 2017. The mission goal is to collect 2 kg of lunar regolith and bring back to the Earth. If they manage to do that, this will be the first time after 45 years, that the Moon’s material is on the Earth.

SpaceX test launch

Space X, a company that manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft, has already made a history. In 2016 they launched spacecraft Dragon with Falcon 9 rocket to the International Space Station and the first-stage successfully returned on the drone ship. However, during the system failures, Falcon 9 explode during ground tests. The Space X philosophy is that rockets can be repaired rather than discarded. In 2017 we are expecting to see if the anomalies have been fixed. If so, this can radically change our space travel program, by making it cheaper.

Geminids Meteor Shower

Another meteor shower is expected, but this time from asteroid 3200 Phaethon. The Geminids shower will be visible after midnight of the 13th December by most of the world in the constellation of the Gemini.
