Headcanon: the "-tooine" suffix for a lot of Star Wars planets is derived from "-tween", as in "between": if a planet has that name, it means it was used as a bridge planet between more local worlds or sectors.
Thus, any planet with "-tooine" is not really that useful or valuable. They don't have precious resources, access to a thousand other systems that are within only a few hours of transit, perfect atmosphere to sustain a wide variety of species, or a vast array of moons and sister planets to make them the centerpiece of a valuable hegemony. A thousand years ago some warlord or merchant or regent said "You know what we need? A good safe spot right between these valuable worlds. Let's build a starbase here. Store some fuel and weapons. Have a repair shop. Landing pads. Maybe a few space stations and skyhooks."
Then, in the case of Dantooine and Tatooine, hyperdrives advanced and imperial boundaries shifted, so all of a sudden this desert planet isn't really worth maintaining landing pads for hundreds of ships. Naboo and Geonosis can free trade with each other directly. We don't need a rest stop anymore.
