Biography
From the time Billie was born, she was a secret, an experiment, a tool, an opportunity. She was born to a pair of particularly ambitious Black Spades. Her mother and father had a vision for the all of Kadeu. Their vision had less to do with raising a family and serving Spade until death or retirement and more to do with raising a weapon so powerful they could themselves lead the Spades to dominate the entire city. Billie was born to become that weapon.
From the time she could walk (early, eight months old), Billie was trained to be at peak physical and magical fitness. Her parents recognized the deep well of magic within her before she was born and used it to their advantage. If she had been born mundane, there’s no doubt they would have cast her aside to the street to breed a more useful subject. In some ways, maybe Billie was lucky. She still has a pulse.
As can probably be guessed, there wasn’t affection in Billie’s childhood. No kisses, no hugs, no words of affirmation or encouragement. If she underperformed in training or failed to reach a metric of combat or magical mastery, she was punished with heavy manual labor, meal skips or sleep deprivation. If she met expectations, she was left alone. Even once she began to grow more powerful and clever than her parents ever dreamed, she might be greeted with a “good soldier” or a pat on the shoulder, nothing more.
When Billie was eight, she met a Spellsword. Her parents had whispered to her about them since she was small, and she’d grown to idolize their strength and prestige as Spade’s most formidable warriors. She’d longed for years already to grow up to be a Spellsword and her fervor only increased when she met one in person.
She threw herself into her training with even more single-minded devotion, staying in touch with the Spellsword to report her progress and pester him for early entry into the Spellsword process. Three years later, she succeeded. At age 11, Billie began her Spellsword initiation.
There were many, many flaws in her parent’s plan, but the biggest one was underestimating their daughter. A few months after Billie’s 22nd birthday, her parents disappeared. Spade authorities and Billie herself mounted an exhaustive search to find them, or at least discover what happened to them. It remains one of the most famous cold cases in Spade history 30 years later. Billie visits their empty graves every year on the anniversary of their disappearance without fail.
After her parents disappearance, Billie disappeared from public life. She became a ghost, specialized in Spade’s most secretive operations. To everyone outside of her fellow Spellswords and the highest Spade command, she’s Ema, a sweet young painter.
Personality
It’s not that Billie feels any special loyalty to Spade. After all, her parents destroyed any chance she had of being a real and complete person in it’s name. It’s just that this fight is all she’s ever known, and judging by what she’s learned through her work, the other factions aren’t much better. She might not control her destiny here, but she has place. She’s useful. She fills the days until her inevitable death, and she doesn’t know how to hope for much else.
It’s strange, because Billie has no doubt she could kill whoever she wanted of any rank. Doubts are for the weak, and if she’s weak she’s useless. Her power is the great equalizer, really. She treats everyone from rank 1 to Face Cards and Aces the same way, because when it comes right down to it, they’re made of the same blood and bones, the same brutalities, jealousies and passions.
Billie is a blank canvas to anyone who bothers to look. She feels. She has desires and trauma and bright sparks of happiness, but she’d never betray that to anyone. She wouldn’t want to be taken advantage of. Maybe one day she’ll learn to trust and open up, but she hasn’t been given a reason to yet.
