During the renaissance wars the Republic of Genoa allied himself with the Spanish crown in exchange for protection against the French. Genoa, however, was never Spain’s underling- the Genovese were magnificent cartographers and skilled seafarers, in combination with the financing done by the Genovese banks they were inexpensable to the Spanish succeses in the new world.
