"Waterproof" - Sparkstember Day 20: Hello Young Lovers
Oh, my god, what a song this is... I fell in love with it from the moment I first heard a snippet of it in the Sparks Brothers documentary. I find it so comforting and uplifting--about not letting life's problems or other people get to you, and I immediately associated it with Sparks' career as well. And of course it's wrapped up in a perfect pop song, full of the lush arrangements and layered vocals that were Sparks' hallmark during this period, with a rousing tempo change that radiates exuberance and never fails to cheer me up! I love so many of the songs from this era, but this one is definitely a standout. So here’s my little comic-strip style tribute to it. I tried to capture the same literal-but-metaphorical sense as the lyrics, with the umbrella symbolizing the narrator’s tough skin... and I also really wanted to illustrate Ron and Russell’s beautiful relationship as brothers, which sounds like it has played a role in their longevity, so this was also partially inspired by their dynamic during their performances. I’ll never get over how clearly their love for each other shines through even on stage.
