Projection Mapping at Weddings: Next Big Thing
Because audiences today are used to different visual media, we want to shock and awe them at the same time. We want to tell stories which mesmerize the audience using the geometry of the space. We want to create magic and fantasy with the ambiance where the spaces are transformed in a split second.
- Himanshu Ghosh, Knownsense Studios
In a society that yearns for the next big thing it is no surprise that the wedding market has begun to tap into that and incorporate myriad technological advancements that break down preconceived notions of what wedding design is supposed to resemble. Projection mapping is certainly not a new invention, however its application and use in the wedding realm can be thought of as groundbreaking and innovative. By integrating projection mapping at weddings, a designer is able to create varied scenes and looks all within a single space.
Knownsense Studios, a multidisciplinary design company based in India, has created a niche market in weddings with 3D projection mapping and continues to push the boundaries as to the extent of how far mapping technology can be used – thus far seeing no true limitations and continuous possibilities. The company’s guiding mission is to take guests on a journey full of fantasy and mysticism.

One example of projection mapping is a wedding ceremony held at City Palace-Jaipur. A royal property in Rajasthan, City Palace-Jaipur’s walls is adorned with beautiful intricate carvings. For this occasion, Knownsense Studios mapped and transformed them into various themes, one being that of relatives of the bride and the groom seen through the windows, blessing and greeting the guests upon arrival.

Like Knownsense Studios, Paul Nasr Wedding Planner based out of Lebanon is also working with projection mapping as part of wedding design. Nasr recognizes the emerging need to offer wedding couples original design concepts to be incorporated into their special day. As such, Nasr has challenged himself and his team to abandon traditional wedding design practices, venturing into uncharted territories such as this outdoor wedding planned by Nasr in conjunction with 3DMF held at Ociel.
A lavish wedding produced Paul Nasr at the Forum de Beirut where the bride was introduced to the invitees at the reception through a dynamic 3D mapping projection by Holoteq.
In the United States, Disney Weddings is hopping on the projection mapping train, yet detouring ever so slightly toward cake mapping. Debuted at the Disney Fairy Tale Weddings and Honeymoons bridal expo, the patented technology brings animation to the couple’s cake, sharing with them and their guests the magic that is Disney.
From these examples, it’s clear that projection mapping has the ability to create moments unlike those of weddings past. For David Merrell, Creative Director of AOO Events, who has used projection mapping now at several weddings, “Projection mapping is a powerful and effective new design tool that has the ability to take people on a journey and at the same time deliver an intended message.”

Incorporating mapping technology enhances the wedding experience, luring its audience in through the use of dynamic visuals and interactive capabilities. The marriage between technology and traditional wedding design is sure to continue to strengthen, resulting in what is sure to be a blissful — and beautiful — union.
