Specialized 2FO Cliplite Clipless MTB Shoes - Product Review
I recently went and entered the world of Cyclocross by purchasing the excellent Cannondale CAADX Tiagra, and although the bike came with some basic pedals with toe clips, I wanted to get some clipless pedals. The SPD-SL type pedal is not quite as suitable for cyclocross as it is for road cycling, and so I opted for some excellent Shimano MT 530 pedals which have the SPD cleat system, but with a larger flat surface around the cleat to give a little more support.
So having bought the pedals my mind turned to shoes as I have been using an entry level lace tie up pair of Specialized shoes, which whilst functional and comfortable, didn’t really feel like they belonged with my new steed.
So I saw these Specialized 2FO Cliplite Clipless MTB Shoes advertised and knew that they were a pair that I would like to try. I was drawn to the Boa technology which I have heard only good things about and by the style and the reviews that I had read about them.
In terms of style, these shoe colour match the new cyclocross bike as if they were made for each other. It’s uncanny. They are very striking and rather cool looking (far too cool for me). The colour match is uncanny and we all know how important that is....
In terms of sizing I generally size up as a 9.5 / 10 in normal day shoes and with these I am perfectly fitted with a 44.
The shoes themselves are extremely stiff. The sole is very though and to me it is immediately how noticeable the power transfer is between the shoe and the pedal. Stomping down gives no feedback into the sole of your foot and you feel comfortable and confident in giving it all you have.
The upper body of the shoe is also quite stiff. Much more so than the entry level previous shoes I was using, and stiffer than my Specialized comp road shoes. I wonder if they will soften in time, but at the moment I have to fairly squeeze myself in to them and on first impressions (before putting them on) I wondered if their stiffness would cause issues with rub or blisters. Having said that, once they are on and the buckles are tightened, they are very comfortable, and those worries were soon dispelled.
I actually wore them for the whole day at work one day (we had a virtual cycling challenge in the office so I had an excuse) and walking around in them was very pleasant.
The recessed nature of the cleat system means you can walk around off the bike quite comfortably without sounding like a tap dancer.
The Boa buckles however really are fantastic. I hadn’t used them before but they make tightening and tweaking and adjustment a breeze on the bike. I like them so much that I’m now planning an upgrade for my road shoes. This system really does make a lot easier but crucially, also much more comfortable.
My old shoes were ok but after about 60 minutes on the bike, I would start to feel a pain in the sole of my shoe where the cleats are attached to the shoe. Nothing like that with this pari. I can, and have, worn them all day and they are surprisingly comfortable whilst their performance on the bike is just great.
All in all this is a great pair of shoes, which you can generally find on a decent deal somewhere if you shop around.
The stiffness of the sole, the comfort of the uppers and the excellence of the boa buckle system really offers a fantastic all round package. You can pick them up for a bit of a bargain with 25% off at Tredz by cliking on the banner below.
