today I am enjoying the Spectacled Tyrant (Hymenops perspicillatus), a bird of which the males look like a cartoon drawing of a bird come to life. Its local name in Chile is “Run-run”.

October 17, 2015 - Spectacled Tyrant (Hymenops perspicillatus)

Found in central and southern South America, these tyrant flycatchers are often seen perching in open areas. Strongly migratory, some populations in Chile must cross the Andes to winter in Argentina and Bolivia. They eat mostly insects and spiders. Females look very different from males and are mostly brown and grey with streaky feather patterns. Males display by flying up from a perch, then circling back, creating a snapping sound in the air.

Spectacled Tyrant (male) - Hymenops perspicillatus

The common name of Spectacled Tyrant given to this flycatcher of the species Hymenops perspicillatus (Passeriformes - Tyrannidae) is quite appropriate, but only with regard the males, who are the only ones with the yellow ring around the eyes.

Hymenops perspicillatus inhabits open lands, grassy areas near water bodies, marshes, fields and pastures in southern South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay).
