I mourn the fact that I started listening to TMA AFTER I stopped doing speech and debate since I would have EATEN UP SOME OF THEM STATEMENTS AS DI’s

When I was six, I learned:

The way I spoke to adults,

Was something to be observed.

Not that they might accept me

Speak to me like a human too

Just titter about the hulking words

Stuck to my tongue, congealed, like glue.

It was the way they taught me to communicate

To engage with others as a display

And so I chased the high of blurting out

Bigger lies, brighter truths, bolder plays.

What I say has to make them smile

Because it's what they trained me to do 

But now I’m fully grown, and I can’t seem to grasp

How to speak to people my age, so I spew.

I forget that they aren’t an audience

That words don’t always have to entertain

There is no king nor court no throne 

I am not a jester, I am mundane

For words forge the links of connection

Meant to pave sidewalks, not to shock-test your home

Instead of sentences that shake out someones laughter

You can speak to know others—to be known

perks of being a speech kid:

•you get good grades because you know how to write persuasive and engaging papers for class

• you know lots of facts about things so ppl think you’re smart

• you can go to bed and get up at anytime and have enough energy to at least fake being alive

disadvantages of being a speech kid

• if you have ADHD it’s kinda hard but when you find that one topic chefs kiss

• god i’m so tired

• lots of energy drinks so heart problems probably

• other people will think we are psychopaths

As a former speech kid I just realized that those web weaving/ parallel things are just tiny versions of POI’s uhhhh. If only I could’ve had this revelation earlier. 😔✊🏽
