There’s a special joy when you’ve worked with a student on a particular speech or language skill for a while and they finally start to get it. Today it was initial /k/ words. We still have a ways to go, but it’s progress.
This week we’re reading “Dragons Love Tacos”, complete with props.
Scoring this fluency assessment is going to drive me batty.
I had a student today who was so excited to find out that we share the same name. She kept saying “There’s two Emily choices?” and repeating random phrases in an announcer’s voice (she has echolalia).
She also guessed I was a teenager, which seems to be a fairly frequent occurrence these days.
Yesterday I had a fairly disastrous session with a student. She cried the entire session and I couldn’t calm her down. Today I thought she’d want nothing to do with me, but at lunch, she handed me the packet with her fork. Then when I prompted, “help please”, she imitated me (which she never does). To make things even more amazing, she then pointed to my clipboard until I wrote down what she said.
Yesterday I found out that one of my students is being re-evaluated for autism and his meeting is next week. Somehow I didn’t get notified, which means I’m now scrambling to get information for a pragmatic profile. Since my co-op didn’t provide me with any age appropriate checklists to use, I had to copy the questions from the example in a test booklet. I then called the student’s parent-even though I really wanted to email instead-and asked her each question so I wouldn’t have to wait for the information.
My anxiety was fairly high the entire time, but I’m pretty impressed with myself.
