sonic doesn’t consider himself smart in the academic sense, like with logistics and math and science and the like. tbh whenever he calls himself dumb in that aspect for the sake of a joke he’s not. entirely kidding. he doesn’t think it’s a bad thing though, since he has no use for that sort of stuff. he knows he’s uneducated, but also knows he’s most probably not very capable of cramming that sort of material and he doesn’t really care. it is what it is man

as for other means of being smart? not exceptionally, actually. he just. thinks. ‘ok im this way but im no genius’ [shrug]. sonic sees himself as smart but not tails, yknow? he’s just. normal. sonic’s confidence is mostly in his skill and not in his mind because he’s never really thought that he could be really clever. it’s just not obvious to him people need to bring it up and ACTUALLY continue with the topic for him to be even close to thinking ‘oh maybe’. with comebacks and stuff yeah but that sort of goes unsaid. tbh when people call him smart most of the time he thinks theyre joking cause most people refer to being smart as numbers and stuff and he assumes that’s what they mean, therefore they’re bluffing.

so he’s just really fast and awesome but not in the smart sort of way is what he thinks?

sonic. hates. failure. in fact he’s afraid of it because even though at the end of his mistakes he rights them, they fuck things up BAD. i.e. the world shatters in unleashed because he got cocky and EVERYTHING DIES in lw because he was reckless. in lw he blames himself right form the get go and i guarantee you he would have kept that to himself (like in unleashed0 had he not been strained with tails. in his mind if he’s around when something bad happened and he didn’t manage to stop the bad thing from happening: it’s his fault, at least in some part. sonic’s not one for acknowledging or consciously taking responsibility (like ‘i am aware i feel and an responsible for ___), but the thing is he cares too much and feels responsible for others either way. so when he’s around, the fastest hedgehog in the world who has saved the world thousands of times, and something goes awry when he could have made it not so, he’ll blame himself, no rationalizing through ‘oh this factor made it impossible for me to do this’ NOPE. GUILTY. shoulda done better. he’s not meant to let things like that happen, he’s meant to keep people safe and when he can’t he feels like shit

accepts them hahaha no sonic channels that guilt into determination to get things back to how they should be, and he uses this fixation to ignore the guilt that is there up until he fixes everything and he tosses that guilt that he never really let out to the back of his head hahaha everything is good now

he’s awful at dealing with his emotions is that obvious

     No small amount of curiosity pools in Sonic’s eyes, eye ridges rising as he looks the ring up and down. He’s interested, though albeit confused. Rings have enough juice in them to poof his alternate back and forth through zones? It’s every bit as temperamental as Sonic’s similarly used Chaos Emerald, but his rings are what he exchanges for food at a restaurant, not tools for travel of that scope.
