He breathed it out as he heard it, his head still ringing in pain and his vision still blurry, but there was no mistake. As soon as she kissed his perspired forehead, he smiled, leaned in and let himself get wrapped in her motherâs embrace. âIâm okay, mom. I didnât mean to scare youâŚâ
Her heart pounded painfully against her ribs, and for a moment, the briefest of moments, ice ran through her veins as she watched her son nearly die right before her. But then she saw him breathing, and she didnât hesitate to throw herself by his side, murmuring something about losing him while brushing a reassuring (and reaffirming) kiss to Billyâs forehead. Hot tears stung at the corners of her eyes, and her throat felt impossibly tight, like she couldnât get a proper breath, but he was alright. He was going to be alright.Â
Hand encased in the signature fuchsia glow, Wanda trailed her fingers from his hairline down the side of his face, stopping only once she reached his jaw. She wasnât exactly thinking, reacting more on instinct than anything, and she didnât know how much pain he was in, but a blow like that had to have left some damage, and if she could ease any of it then sheâd try.
âIs that better?â she asked, concern etched in every facet of her being.
