though kairi had been thoroughly exhausted after training, sleep refused to claim her. the darkness that engulfed her when she closed her eyes wasn't comforting enough to let her drift into sleep, & so she found herself tip––––toeing through the castle to slip through the doors & take a seat on the steps with her head tilted back to watch the stars.
she had once written that the sky was the same throughout all of the worlds, & that thought continued to bring her comfort no matter where she ended up. no matter how different the constellations or how far away the stars, it was always nice to look up & know that she was under the same sky that her friends were also under.
it reassured her now, but did nothing to help with her inability to get any rest.
despite the lack of surprise she felt when the door opened behind her, kairi couldn't help the way she jumped. her head turned just in time to watch aqua walk through the threshold.
❛ master aqua! ❜
she didn't stand, but the surprise was evident by the expression on her face. suddenly, kairi felt a lot like she had been caught by a teacher doing something against the rules at school.
❛ i know i should be resting so i'll be ready for training tomorrow, but i couldn't get to sleep. i just...thought i'd spend a little time outside. get some fresh air, you know? ❜
