These penguins are found in the Galápagos Islands, with as much as 95% of the population living on the islands of Isabela and Fernandina. This makes them the penguin species with the most northerly breeding range. Hunting in groups, they feed on small fish and crustaceans, capturing their prey while swimming. Breeding throughout the year, monogamous pairs nest in caves or crevices in rocks, where females can lay up to three clutches of eggs per year. Both parents incubate the eggs and feed the chicks. They are listed as Endangered by the IUCN due to the reduced availability of fish from increasingly common El Niño events and warming temperatures, as well as threats from commercial fishing, oil spills, disease, and introduced predators like cats, rats, and dogs.
