Hey Gael! I really love your art and think you're a really cool and sweet person. Also, have any tips for character design, specifically wardrobe? Your characters outfits look amazing.
Aw, thank you! :3
For character wardrobe design tips…think of the world you are designing for. Specifically, the place. When I modeled my Huntress I looked at outfits worn in Menagerie as well as remnant as a whole - some things I picked up for Menagerie were Blake’s mom’s black shrug, the use of armor, and the “elegance” of trimmed embroidery and flourish. Remnant has the overall the usage of bodices/corsets (as what Ruby and Pyrrha wear), and it fit the “elegance” of my idea, so I added that in as well. You want your character to fit in the already-existing universe, so observe what patterns and themes are used to the already existing designs and develop something completely your own. :3
You also want to consider function- why did my character choose to wear this? For my Huntress I added a thick belt and hip support strap to carry the heavy weight of Catharsis’s second blade. She would also need a system to carry the primary blade - enter the shoulder straps. The red skirt piece is a piece of fabric, but a generic piece of fabric can be used for so many things - just look at how people used to use bandanas. (It would also protect her leg from Catharsis rubbing up against it) The armor is self-explanatory, and the less exposed skin would protect her from harsh sunlight from Menagerie as well as Grimm attacks. And heels? Everybody needs a good pair of heels.
The good news with RWBY is the vastness of the wardrobe - you’ve got the modern with Jaune and his hoodie/jeans and people like Reese, Neptune and Sun, but you’ve also got that hint of fairy-tale magic with Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Pyrrha and Prof. Glinda. Much like the real world there’s such a vastness to the differences that there’s so much to draw inspiration from.
It always helps to draw multiple outfits too, with the things you like. Eventually you’ll come up with something that embodies exactly what you want and looks great!
