It's been a year (& 3 days!) since Barney suffered from a spinal stroke (fibrocartilaginous embolism - FCE). He collapsed in the garden & within a few hours, Barney was paralysed in his back end - losing all feeling & function in both hind legs & totally unable to walk. It was such a shock. He wasn’t in pain, thank goodness but was really distressed & confused & I was just devastated. Especially given Barney's age, I really wasn't sure if he'd recover from this & the first few months after the FCE were hard, as he needed help to stand, or move...

However, 1 year on & although Barney isn't 100% & is a bit frail & wobbly, he is happily walking around by himself again. In fact, every now & again he even has a little "run" & we occasionally have ridiculous slow motion chases when Barney decides he is definitely deaf & ignores me, so I have to go trotting after him! Good old Barney is still the same happy, bouncy chappie he's always been & not looking too bad for 15.5 years old. What a dog! Love this pup so much ❤

#spinal stroke #fibrocartilaginous embolism #if your dog suddenly & inexplicably becomes paralysed you may want to mention spinal strokes/FCE when you go to the vet!#it seems common for vets to misdiagnose this condition - which given the intial severity of symptoms can have serious consequences #it took us a week to get a correct diagnosis for Barney - I kept going back & got told it was arthritis etc #symptoms can look similar to a slipped disc #they suddenly lose all feeling & function in some or all of their legs (depending on where on the spine the stroke happened)#they also may lose bowel &/or bladder control #however a dog which has a slipped disc will be in agony whereas once the stroke has finished a dog who had an FCE will be pain free #a spinal stroke can happen to a dog of any age breed size etc #good news is the outlook is usually quite positive #it may take time - weeks/months - up to a year - but most dogs do regain some or nearly all their mobility #barney #senior dog #dog #dog health

Ah, my dear pal, what a year it has been - he’s scared me more than once! It’s just over 7 months now since Barney had an FCE/spinal stroke & lost all feeling & function in both hind legs. I really wasn’t sure if he’d still be with me even by summer... but here we are, at the end of 2021, having celebrated his 15th birthday a couple of months ago! I truly treasure our time together, my best old boy. He is a joyful & determined pup.

#he actually had a vet appointment today 31st Dec...#new vet who was very gentle & prepared to be slow & as a result kept Barney calm enough to do a physical examination #normally Barney explodes in fury the second any vet tries to touch him #so check-ups are more them saying how is he? and me saying yeah good #anyway apparently barney's heart is good #vet is happy barney is maintaining weight & feels he's doing well.#just said watch him & if he starts struggling more with arthritis we can try new pain meds #barney #border collie #senior dog #spinal stroke #2021
