9/20/25.
Pop Superette (Pop Supérette) is a label from Toulouse, France. We've posted about 3-4 releases since 2018. Pierre finds new bands and sometimes releases reissues. Mitzpah is a little bit of both.
The band is made up of members from The Stinky Toys and Spions (according to the Bandcamp page, Spions were the first punk band of the Warsaw Pact!). They moved from Paris to New York, made some demos, and like so many bands (and demos) were lost to time.
In the early 2020s the band reformed and re-recorded their early demos. The result is "Lonesome Harvest: Re-enactment N°1 (Paris 1981)". I've been enjoying this album all day and it's really hard to describe it. Maybe its a cross between The Velvet Underground and David Bowie. Apparently Hervé Zénouda (who along with Gregor Davidow made up Mitzpah) was influenced by The Feelies and Television. And, since I've been listening to a lot of Ed Askew these days, I can't help but think that Askew could have made an album like this.
Really, I want to celebrate Pop Superette. They don't release a lot, but you know what they release will be of the highest quality.
