I like this idea for a spiral-shaped building. This particular one is inside a glass dome which I'm sure would be expensive, but in the absence of the glass I don't see why it would have to be expensive. It could serve a lot of purposes from a parking garage, to a park, to private or shared open space for housing units that could be built in the center. It could evolve over time to be any or a combination of those things. Basically it could give people some open space even in a dense city where land is limited.

This also reminds me of some concepts I saw at the "Vertical Cities Asia" exhibit (http://www.verticalcitiesasia.com) - many of them either small-footprint, very tall buildings, or dome-like structures that arch over the landscape but still allow light through. These would let you use the ground surface for agriculture or just leave it in a natural state.

For these concepts to work, we will eventually need to move beyond steel and concrete, the great 20th century materials, to the next great materials, whether carbon fiber or something we haven't thought of yet.
