Splatoon Multiplayer Moment: Once a Support Player, Always a Support Player

(Take note that these matches were during Turf War, not Ranked. I have no interest in Ranked battles.)

I tried to be more offensive and gave the Hero Shot a, well, shot. That ended poorly, but I was determined to try to get the hang of a different play style so I kept trying. The first of two Hero Shot vs Charger shenanigans at Arowana Mall then began, as in, there was a Charger on the enemy team. If I remember correctly there was a Charger on my team too so I figured I’d just leave the snipers to duel but that’s kind of hard to do when you try to go down one of the side alleys and see that enemy Charger set up just a few feet from the exit.

Ahh, the familiar feeling of being pinned by a Charger. As someone who likes to harass Chargers this was an all too familiar and welcome battle of wills and wit. I should have been trying to be more aggressive, instead my “Support” switch turned on and I ended up staying in place, intentionally harassing the Charger by feinting with shots and Burst Bombs while I was behind cover. Turning my camera I could tell when the Charger took their eyes off me and I would remind them immediately that I was still here, waiting for an opportunity to strike. I was actually surprised that my scare tactics were working since I don’t recall the Charger splatting anyone. My memory isn’t the best, all I can recall is that they kept training their sight on the exit to the alley, which I found odd cause they tried to snap their shots the first few times they tried to get me.

Frankly, I was content to remain in place getting a few giggles out of getting a reaction from the Charger when I see the marker of an ally Super Jumping to me. There’s that opportunity. While I was pinned I made sure the Charger never got a good look at me, for obvious reasons, so when my ally charged out into the fray the Charger must have mistook my ally for me and fell for it hook, line and sinker! Splat! At that point I decided I had “wasted” enough time and got back to covering turf, pushing the rest of the enemy team back, and maybe trying to find that Charger again. My first victory with the Hero Shot did not go as I thought it would have but since I got to harass a Charger I have no regrets.

But I said I would try offensive so I tried being offensive again. The results were spectacular!... As in spectacularly bad. Then I got in a match with an enemy team that had a Heavy Splatling and an E-Liter 3K (couldn’t tell if they were deco/custom but I do believe the Splatling must have been deco due to lack of Splash Wall.) The moment I saw those two I just panicked and slipped back into my support player habits of covering turf and hiding. I managed to be the first to the middle for the first time and immediately freaked out about being in the open so, in my panic, I ended up retreating to the enemy side alley instead of the alley I came from.

At that point other players were showing up to the middle so I felt kind of pinned. I helped my teammates take out anyone heading to the middle but I had yet to see the Splatling nor the E-liter. I was peeking around the corner down the alley and guess the two squids that were coming straight down the alley? My thoughts at the time could be summed up as “くコ:彡 my life!” I had no Bomb Range Up and I didn’t want to become overly reliant on Ninja Squid for when the Red vs Blue Splatfest started so this was a lovely situation.

I’m not sure what possessed me to try but I threw a Burst Bomb down at the turn of the corner to see if I could scare them away. They started charging their weapons. Feeling even more panicked I abandoned ship, but then I thought about the repercussions of leaving the two to set up. My instincts as a support player wouldn’t allow it! I climbed back up there and waited. The E-Liter turned the corner and I let loose before they could react. Then there was the Splatling who definitely knew I was still there. Grazed hits and a Burst Bomb Rush later I somehow pulled off that ambush.

You’d think that would be the end of the story as I go back to join the front lines but, nope! My “Support” switch never turned off so I stayed in the side alley, keeping enemies off the middle, providing a pathway for my allies, jumping off every once and a while to cover more turf before heading back in and having a rematch with the Splatling and E-Liter. My teammates must have been doing a good job of keeping the two from heading to the middle through the center, or the two probably thought I wouldn’t stay in there, because here were the two again getting ready to jump down into the alley. I greeted them with open arms, and by that I mean Burst Bombs. The Splatling tried to fight back but my Burst Bombs were just a bit too quick for their gun. The E-Liter retreated after one too many splash hits from my Burst Bombs. I could definitely remember finally jumping down from the alley for good for the last 15-20 seconds of the match to cover as much ground as I could, with a Burst Bomb Rush finish at the last 10 seconds, but otherwise I ended up blocking a pathway and adequately distracting the E-Liter and Splatling enough to get my teammates to the enemy base without fear of being picked off at a distance.

That was my last battle of the day and a great end to a terrible start with a new weapon. A Hero Shot was not the first weapon I would have picked for the job, but I think I can see some potential with this bad boy! Chargers beware! ;)

I'm still super bummed out that I can't play in the 4vs4 matches with my sister in splatoon, and I can't play with my friends since none of them own a wii-u : (

So... is splatoon multiplayer just online friends only, cuz my sis and I really want to play together :/ ( I don't mean baloon battle, I mean turf war )
