OBSERVATIONS
The most disturbing thing about this patient is that, when she talks of the murders that occurred in that house, she describes them as “necessary” and “part of the natural order of things”.
She, like her brothers, has been conditioned from childhood to view killing other humans much like the ordinary person might view the slaughtering of an animal for food. The Hewitts see anyone who is not a blood relative, part of “The Family”, as a raw material if you will, something to be eaten or taken apart to be made into something they can utilise in their everyday life. I dread to think how far back into their family tree these warped practices can be traced.
Unlike the other members of the Hewitt family, I do not believe the patient has any tendencies towards sociopathy or psychopathy. Although, in most cases, she aided and abetted in the deaths of the victims, leading them to her brothers or assisting in their capture, she did not participate in the killing itself. Her main role in this twisted household was as “the cook”, preparing the victim’s flesh for consumption.
As the most “normal” and socially integrated member of the family, she was also able to run a gas station just outside of their property and use this occupation to send unfortunate travellers into the clutches of her brothers.
She appears to have taken no pleasure in the suffering of the Hewitt victims and seems almost remorseful about sending them to their deaths. She is not without feeling, and this improved her chances at rehabilitation dramatically. She admits that she would often try to stop her brothers from “batting them poor folks around like a cat with a mouse” and wanted them to be killed quickly and humanely.
Though my observations are not yet complete, my earliest thoughts are that the victim shows traits similar to those suffering with Stockholm Syndrome. She was born into this family rather than having been kidnapped and this way of life is therefore all that she knows now. She is also of relatively low intelligence and is extremely suggestible which I believe has prevented her from even considering the possibility of life outside of “The Family”. If I am correct in my initial diagnosis, I believe a full rehabilitation is possible.
