Types of railway waggons

COVERED Cart

Covered cart for transportation of goods with the protection from adverse rainfall conditions. lading and unloading is carried out through the doors on the sides of the cart. Covered wagons are universal( for transportation of piece, packaged unit, packaged and bulk weight) and special( for beast, vehicles, goods in rolls). cargo 55- 69 tonnes, volume 78- 135 m3.

OPEN WAGON

Open waggon-open cart with high sides. Used for transportation of bulk, dry bulk and general weight, which don't bear protection from the rain. The absence of the roof allows the upper lading and unloading. The open cart carry ore, coal, fluxes, timber, essence products, accoutrements etc. There are models with disburdening doors. cargo open cart 65- 72 tons, volume 70- 100 m3.

PLATFORM Cart

Platform-open cart for transportation of vehicles, ministries, accoutrements , holders, timber and timber, long and large goods and other. Construction features of the platforms may differ depending on the model and the specialization of the goods transported. Are classified into universal platform( including fitting for vessel) and technical platform. cargo of platforms 60- 75 tonnes.

TANK WAGON

Tank carts- largely technical rail vehicles for transportation of liquid goods, food products, thawed feasts, chemically active and sharp liquids, and greasepaint accoutrements . Cargo capacity of tank cart- barrel( tank). cargo of tank carts from 25 tonnes( 4 axle tanks for transportation of thawed feasts) to 125 tonnes( 8- axle tanks for transportation of petroleum derivations), volume from 50 to 160 m3.

HOPPER WAGON

Hopper cart- tone- discharging cart cellarage type for massive transportation of bulk weight. The frame has shape channel located at the bottom of doors of through which are disburdened. Hopper carts deliver transport diseases, grain, ore, coal, cement. There are open hopper. Hopper carts cargo 64- 75 tons, volume 42- 146 m3.

RAIL TRANSPORTER

Transporter specialized rail vehicle for the transport of heavy and large weight. Are maintained transporters platform type, sump type, area type, coupled type and common type. To transport mills, creators, columns, presses, turbines, rotors, and other stations. cargo of transporter 70 to 550 tons.

Railroad History

Historically, the rail engineering manufacturers or service never reached Virginia City. It only went as far as Alder, Montana ten miles away. Charlie Bovey purchases two coal fired Davenport "Dinky" locomotives to transport visitors daily between Nevada City and Virginia City during the summers of 1964 through 1969. These locomotives came from the Anaconda Copper Mining Company's Great Falls Smelter. 

The train did not run again until 1972, when operations were resumed using the "Work Train", a small gasoline powered speeder engine with four "gang" cars attached. In 1988, an ornamental boiler was added to the speeder engine, and the engine was refined and improved during the winter of 1990-91.

On the terrifying night of August 16, 1991 a couple of the railroad crew entered the Nevada City Round House to steal fuel. They used a lighter to see, and when the gas sprayed out of their plastic jug it exploded, burning the roundhouse, one hundred thousand dollars worth of train artifacts, including stained glass car windows, burning the "work train", and ruining the two operable "dinky" steam locomotives.

On September 23, 1991, about a month after the roundhouse fire, John Larkin of the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad of Wells, Michigan, came to Virginia City for the first time. He wanted to buy the three c. 1906 Soo Line passenger cars. Years of negotiations between Mr. Larkin and Ford Bovey followed. In the Spring of 1992, Mr. Larkin delivered a beautifully rebuilt version of the former work train and four cars equipped with air brakes, seat cushions, and canvas tops. It was operated by the Bovey family from 1992 through 1996. May 1, 1996, an exchange was finally agreed upon trading the three Soo Line Cars, the Chapel Car, and a Shay locomotive for the rebuilding of the mile and one-half of track between Nevada and Virginia Cities and the fully restored 1910 Baldwin Steamer locomotive. In early October, 1996, John Larkin had the four cars and locomotive loaded by crane and hauled by truck to Twin Bridges, then shipped by rail to Michigan.

The contracts with John Larkin were included at no cost to the State of Montana when the sale of the Bovey Restoration properties took place in May 1997. The years of negotiations and preparations before the State purchased the Bovey properties in 1997 finally became a reality when Governor Marc Racicot drove in the golden spike to dedicate the Alder Gulch Shortline Railroad on September 10, 1999.

In May, 1998, Bob Whiticomb, a former track foreman and roadmaster for the Milwaukee Railroad, started rebuilding the mile and a half of track to accommodate the large 1910 Baldwin engine. Original rail was reused, but all four thousand or so ties were replaced with new ones. Widening the curves to accommodate the much larger Baldwin locomotive was a major problem. Turning the locomotive around at each end of the track was another challenge, solved at last by building two "wyes." A crew of about six men worked daily using methods much the same as a hundred years previous throughout the summer months. In late September, John Larkin and a large crew from Escanaba arrived, and the area was buzzing with railroad building activity. A new steel bridge spanned the cascade of Alder Creek in Virginia City. Beautiful, sparkling red dolomite ballast from the talc mine South of Ennis was carefully tamped to produced what may be the most beautiful railroad bed in the United States.

Through the summer of 1999, the Escanaba crew continued tamping the track and correcting various problems that arose, creating anticipation for the engine's arrival. At last, on July 31, Virginia City awoke to find the long awaited locomotive in town. An air of excitement hung over the whole area as locals and tourists gathered above the stone wall near the Virginia City Depot.

The engine shimmered in the morning sun. Polished brass and shining black paint gleamed. The engine was resplendent in a Smithsonian quality restoration! Years of work by the Escanaba crew and John Larkin were at their climax as two cranes lifted the forty ton beauty gently onto the track. Engine 12 took its first run under its own power from Nevada City to Virginia City on August 4, 1999. It operated from 1999 to 2010. It is now stored in the Nevada City train barn and in the future will be put on public display.

Indian freight cars or Railway signalling

Indian freight cars or Railway signalling is part science and part art form, it has always relied heavily on dedicated staff and in the early years on the memory of train crews. For details of the ways signals were actually used to control traffic movements see the section on Communications & Traffic Control. This section deals with the appearance and construction of the signals.

Have you ever wondered how local trains, running at high speeds during peak hours just a few metres away from each other, save themselves from collision? You can now find out by visiting the Western Railway’s heritage gallery, which has put up for display a working model of the railway’s signalling system.

Mumbai’s local trains are fitted with the Auxiliary Warning System (AWS). This machine brings the local train to a halt automatically if the motorman fails to stop when the light is red at the signal, and drives ahead. The AWS also warns the motorman if he has crossed a signal that has turned yellow (indicating that another train has just passed but is not yet a safe distance away).

On hearing the warning, which is a hoot, the motorman is expected to slow down. Then, if the speed is not brought to 43kmph, the AWS brings the train to a halt.

To explain this system to commuters, WR engineers have created a miniature model of the system. A team of 12 engineers, from the Senior Section Engineers’s office at Andheri, worked on the model for four months. It has been set up at the WR’s heritage gallery, at its headquarters, opposite the Churchgate station.

Sharat Chandrayan, chief PRO, WR said: “It is because of the AWS system that 69 lakh commuters can travel safely. We thought it would be interesting to show people how our system works.”

The model comprises two railway stations, named Andheri and Bandra, with six signals between them. The train comes to a halt automatically when the signal turns red.
