writing a dystopian novel right now is actually writing something that becomes less and less dystopian with each passing day
me? spending weeks/months reconfiguring popular songs and quotes to fit into my books universe?? more likely than u think.
in this world, einstein said knowledge was more important than imagination and socrates thinks the examined life is not worth living and descartes says ‘I follow therefore I am’ and I AM HAVING LOTS OF FUN BEING GOD

Calling Beta Readers!
About the book:
The Marks We Bear is a YA dystopian novel.
Summary: Isla Batali is supposed to be dead. Since the Split, a genetic mutation believed to split the soul in two, was discovered, babies born with the Mark and all its negative characteristics have been taken to brutal research camps in order to end the mutation. Raised in a basement alongside her unMarked twin, Isla has spent her entire life hiding from the outside world and the sentries who would take her away. But when another family in the neighborhood are taken as Traitors, Isla realizes her family’s rebellion isn’t isolated. After her own parents are arrested, Isla is forced on the run with her unMarked neighbor Alex and her twin sister Harper. On a mission to reach the friends who helped them 17 years ago, Isla finds that there’s a secret within the camps, one that puts all the Marked children’s lives on a deadline.
With no one else to turn to, Isla and her new allies launch a mission to save a friend from the research camp before it’s too late. Along the way, Isla has to decide whether she believes the stories she’s been told about who she is or to use the voice she was never allowed to have.
This is the story of one girl’s fight to be moral in a world that believes she’s incapable and her journey to define for herself what it means to be good.
What to expect:
Length: around 80k words, 29 chapters
Intended reading rate: around 15-20k words a week (aiming for no more than six weeks total)
Looking for: 10 to 15 readers who are a fan of the genre and can give feedback on anything from character development to the general arc of the story to relationships between characters.
In addition, the novel includes LGBT characters and bilingual characters, and I’m hoping to get feedback on those aspects as well, so if you can provide specific feedback regarding them as well as general feedback, that would be amazing! I’m looking for those experienced or familiar with critiquing as well as just those who like the genre or summary provided! As long as you are willing to give detailed feedback you’ll be considered!
If you’re interested: Fill out this questionnaire! Please keep in mind that I am looking for serious and detailed feedback and whether or not you think you’ll be able to provide it within the timeframe! I’ll be closing the form on July 12th!
What will you need to do as a beta reader?
For starters, you will need to provide some kind of email address so I can send the google doc link for the draft! With the doc, I’ll send a list of around 15 questions that you can answer as you read! I’m looking for feedback of all kinds, and honest critique, so please don’t worry about hurting my feelings.
If you’re interested, please fill out the form, and if not, feel free to share this post! Thank you for the help! <3 If you have any questions, DM me!
