I find this part of the episode interesting because look at how this conversation unfolds. At first they're mostly all included, it's a conversation between all four of them even if not all 4 speak.
But then the Deputy starts with his comments and Dean gets prickly and we get just them on the shot.
Dean: Is there a problem?
Brice: No. No, there's no problem. You ain't the first feds to roll through here and come up with nothing. Sure is cute to watch you try, though.
Dean: Oh, pal, the FBI doesn't do cute.
And the Deputy is kinda... intense
You'd think that since Dean and "Deputy Douche" clashed Sam would be the one to go talk to him, but nope.
Sam: All right. I'll go try and crack the police server. Maybe something showed up on surveillance.
Dean: Yeah, maybe I'll go crack the deputy.
Sam: Right, but this time, try to be a little less defensive of your "pretend job."
Dean: You know, this badge means something.
Sam: I made it at Kinko's.
Dean: Yes, you did. Be proud of that.
On the surface, their conversation here is about Dean, the supposed FBI Agent, noting Deputy Brice here as the local help they need for the case, "someone who's not ah – not afraid to talk shop with the big boys back in D.C."
But damn if there isn't a second layer of Dean clocking that the Deputy is into him and using it.
Once they get to business ("Well, first of all, I'm gonna need you to be totally straight with me. Is there any footage of the attack – anything?" lol at the phrasing), see how they tone it down:
Dean: I'm sure he did. All right, well, I appreciate the cooperation, Deputy, and, uh, when I need you, I'll come find you, okay?
Brice: All right.
Dean: All right.
As Mr. Mittens said while I was watching this episode, any episode that includes Jody Mills is automatically on his list of favorite episodes. He referred to it as "a special subsection" of his favorites list :')
But this is really Donna's hunter origin story, from "WHAT THE CUSS? VAMPIRES?!" to "Hakuna matata, lady" with a tidy beheading in the span of 20 minutes. :')
And a prime example of a "monster" integrating himself into human society and living like a human being, rather than preying on humanity and living on the fringes of society. Which is a theme I always appreciate.
I know that this happened almost 3 seasons ago and I’m probably overreacting because it hits to close to home, but I was rewatching plush today and it still drives me nuts that we’re supposed to view Donna’s ex as a douche(which he is) for making fun of her weight but then the hero of the story refers to her as “fat-sucking Donna” and it’s played for laughs never and never portrayed as a bad thing

This has always bugged me. I mean, I adore Donna, and it’s clear that Dean does, too, and that he not only remembers her and thinks fondly of her, but it’s sort of implied that she does talk to Dean once in a while:
(Dean’s phone starts ringing)Dean: Well, I’ll be damned.Sam: Huh?Dean (on phone): Donna, what’s shakin’?Sam (whispering): ‘Fat sucker’ Donna?Dean (on phone): What do you mean “Killer bunny”?
The context here is that Dean’s just caught Sam praying to God, and Dean’s generally grumpy about this because Sam is convinced his “visions” must be coming from God (spoiler alert: they’re coming from Lucifer), while Dean is basically “fuck that guy, he’s never done anything for us before, so why now?”
They’re also discussing the fact that the Scrolls Cas went all the way to Gaza for are basically useless at finding something to help them stop the Darkness, and Dean was kinda desperate for a distraction so as not to be dragged into the pointless translation of a bunch of ancient Aramaic… Donna delivered it.
I, too, am offended that Sam still remembers her as “fat sucker Donna,” but not because SHE was a fat sucker, but because the case they first met her on, the monster itself was literally a fat sucker… a pishtaco. That was back when they were trying to keep the truth about monsters away from Donna. But her monster-hunting introduction came a full season earlier in 10.08. The fact that Sam seems to have blotted that from his mind is a bit insulting to Sam, but throughout all their interactions, Dean had typically been the one to be more “friendly” with Donna.
Going back to 9.13, they instantly bonded over powdered donuts, and then even with Sam RIGHT THERE, Dean– even with the Mark, even when Sam’s typically the one to be more sympathetic with witnesses and victims, it’s Dean who bonds with Donna over how Doug #1 had treated her, much the way Jody bonds with Donna in 10.08 when she calls Doug #1 a fat-shaming douche to his face.
Granted, Donna doesn’t really get a chance to come into her own until s13, when we get to see more of her both in Wayward and in Breakdown. Jenny Klein did better with her in 10.08 than snymelo did in 9.13 and 11.07, but honestly she was fantastic in Breakdown (hooray Davy).
I have no idea if the “fat sucker Donna” line in 11.07 was some sort of writer’s room pushback by Snymelo against Jenny Klein having taken “their character” and pushed her with both hands into the hunting life, but 11.07 did more than just put that ugly phrase in Sam’s mouth. It also took the entire resolution of the story out of Donna’s hands and gave it to Dean (getting his butt kicked by the ghost while Sam burns the final possessed plushie head) instead, and just… ick.
Thank HECK Donna finally got some more respectful treatment by the narrative in s13. She deserved better than Doug #1, and she deserved better than being kept in the dark, better than being treated like a child and sidelined in her own case, reduced to babysitter while the “professional hunters” interviewed the witness, and babysitting Doug #2 while Sam and Dean handled the ghost.
Sam could’ve said, “Hibbing Donna?” or “Donna from that vampire sheriff case?” or “Jody’s friend Donna?” or any of a number of other things, but nope… “fat sucker Donna.” Because that’s the first case Sam associated with her, I guess? Bleh… I’m just going with “Sam was addled from a combination of Lucifer sending him horrifying visions for the last stretch, worry over the Darkness, and potentially days of sleepless frustration trying to translate untranslatable ancient documents.”
Damn, I hated Doug the first second he opened his mouth and dissed Donna. MOFO.
Damn, Jodie looks pissed. Good to know that Alex is still alive and still with Jodie. Yeah \o/

That scene of MOC!Dean and the dead (demon??) bodies, reminded me of Lucifer!Sam, and the dead minions of Azazel from Swan Song.

Qu'on me permette un peu de glousser sur Jody et Donna *______* Je suis extrêmement ravie de revoir ces deux là et qu'elles se rencontrent ! Maintenant je voudrais que Dorothy et Charlie reviennent d'Oz et rencontrent Castiel et tout serait parfait.
J'aime infiniment le personnage de Jody parce que contrairement à la plupart des autres, elle se souvient de ses traumatismes et les auteurs ne l'oublient pas. Et Donna est une façon merveilleuse pour les auteurs de se rattraper un peu sur la misogynie navrante du show... Son personnage mis face à son ex-mari est crédible et très joliment tourné.
Donc, déjà, je gloussais.
Les voir interagir ensemble et en comparaison des winbros ça fend un peu mon petit cœur plein de headcanons sur l'enfance des frangins. On sait que Dean et John ont caché la vérité sur la chasse à Sam aussi longtemps que possible. Tout comme Jody cache la vérité à Donna, pour la protéger et ne pas à avoir à porter le poids d'avoir embarqué quelqu'un d'innocent là dedans.
Dans cet épisode, pour moi, Jody et Donna sont Dean et Sam quand Sam a commencé à chasser. Donna a exactement l'excitation de gosse qu'un Sam de 14 ans aurait en tuant son premier monstre et en se tournant vers Dean pour avoir son approbation. Et Jody est un Dean de 18 ans, déjà un peu blasé mais encore certain de faire la bonne chose, tout fier de son petit frère et prêt à le guider comme il l'a toujours fait. (Excusez moi je pars pleurer un seau et je reviens)
Et elles se parlent. Jody et Donna se parlent contrairement à Dean et Sam. La scène où Donna rappelle la mort de son mari à Jody est importante pare qu'elle montre deux personnes qui, sans beaucoup se connaitre, prêtent attention l'une à l'autre et même si l'expression de Jody ne change pas, Donna le voit, elle voit qu'elle a touché un point sensible et elle comprends.
Ce point précis est assez révélateur quand on le place en comparaison des Winchesters. Deux frangins qui se connaissent tellement qu'ils savent exactement ou ne pas regarder pour éviter de parler réellement. Sam qu'on dit le plus compatissant des deux sait exactement quand ne pas regarder pour ne pas voir qu'il y a un problème avec Dean. Sinon, il le verrait tout de suite. Ces deux là savent quand l'autre ment et là, ils font exprès de ne rien voir. Ce n'est pas pour rien que la toute dernière image c'est le phare de l'impala qui s'allume. (Oui, bon , là j'en fais trop mais symboliquement, sachant comment va tourner l'épisode de la semaine prochaine, ça veut vraiment dire "yeup, on va mettre un GROS coup de projecteur sur ce qui fait mal".)
Tout l'épisode mène à la double discussion entre Jody et Donna et Dean et Sam. Les deux premières sont sincères exactement comme les frangins l'étaient il y a quinze ans. Les deux autres enterrent tranquillement leur mensonge respectif.
A savoir, la musique de ce moment "Americana" est la même utilisée pour la plupart des confessions que Dean fait à Sam. Ici, pour une fois, ce n'est pas Sam qui pose la question en attendant une réponse, c'est Dean qui s'ouvre délibérément tout seul sans qu'on l'y amène... Et...
ET TRENTE ANS QUE TU CONNAIS CE MEC T'ES PAS CAPABLE DE PIGER QU'IL Y A UN OS ??? SAM WINCHESTER T'AS DU BOL D'ETRE BEAU PARCE QUE TU ES STUPIDE SUR CE COUP LA ! (pardon, je me calme.) Mais ça n'arrive jamais, à Dean de se confier à Sam, pas sans une raison, une occasion ou quelque chose de spécial. C'est totalement hors personnage et au moment où il parle volontairement de la Marque de Cain, on sait déjà qu'il y a un problème.
Et le fait qu'il la frotte avant de remonter dans la voiture prouve qu'il ment. Et Sam ne le voit pas. Ou plutôt il choisit de ne pas le voir parce qu'il a besoin d'un espoir quelconque qu'ils soient sortis de la mouise.
Hors, ils ne le sont pas... Mais alors pas du tout. Ça fait deux fois que, contrairement à ce qu'il avait promis en 10.04, Dean ne laisse pas Sam gérer les tueries pour ne pas réveiller la marque. Et je compte pas le nombre de fois où il lui a menti. Et le petit passage où Dean fait savoir à Sam qu'il devrait être fier, même de ses faux badges du FBI... Tiens, un écho de la saison3 où, sachant qu'il allait mourrir, Dean apprends à Sam à réparer l'Impala. Ici, il met un point final à son éducation avec la dernière chose que Sam n'a pas apprise de lui : être fier de ce qu'il est. Du moins assez pour continuer tout seul.
Ceci est du foreshadowing. Ceci, c'est les auteurs ammenant doucement chez l public la réalisation que Dean va mal finir. Voire finir tout court. Et cette fois, il n'attends pas de Sam qu'il le sauve, il ne l'espère même pas. Il sait qu'il est finit et il commence à dire au revoir.
Je retourne pleurer un seau.
L'autre partie intéressante de l'épisode ce sont les monstres de la semaine, qui, comme une semaine sur deux soulèvent la question de l'année : qui est le vrai monstre? Parce que les vampires, de base c'est des monstres. Mais les vampires qui ne font de mal à personne ? Est ce qu'ils méritent de mourrir ? Est ce qu'ils méritent de mourrir de la propre main des gens qu'ils aiment et tentent de protéger après avoir entendu " Onn t'aime frangin, mais on ne sait plus qui tu es" ...
Est ce que je dois le surligner en fluo ou tout le monde a vu le parallèle là ? Hein vous l'avez vu hein ? Vous l'avez vu qu'entre Dean devenu démon et ce que Sam est prêt à faire pour le sauver on va pas tarder à se demander qui est le pire des deux ?
Oui. Je sais. On a déjà vu ça avec l'épisode 10.04 et les soeurs loup garou. Et dans le 10.02 avec Cole qui dit à Sam que des monstres il en a beaucoup vu et ils étaient tous humains... et ... Oui on arrête pas de nous le répéter. SPN ça fait plus dans la subtilité depuis bien bien longtemps ^^
Reste à savoir, lequel des deux sera assez monstrueux pour tuer l'autre.
