Both Dean and Sam have this perception of Sam as a 'people person' or the sympathetic one, Sam with the 'puppy dog eyes', especially when it comes to talking with victims but he literally learned it from Dean.

In 1x03 when Dean is opening up about his trauma with his mum to Lucas in order to connect, the camera lingers on Sam's face, the surprise about the vulnerability that Dean is sharing but also the fact that it works. Then we roll around to 1x07 and we see Sam clumsily apply the same 'technique' when connecting with Lori, the victim of the hook man. It works, Lori is confused and afraid and finds companionship with Sam, but Sam's recreation of Dean's moment with the kid feels off and I think it boils down to the fact that Dean was more genuine and Sam's was a technique. This isn't to say that Sam didn't aptly draw comparison to Lori when it comes to watching a significant other die, but Sam never fully lets himself be vulnerable, he cuts himself off before he can fully voice what has happened to him (which is okay, processing trauma takes time, but with Sam repression is a reoccurring theme) and part of that is because he's approaching it from a logical standpoint, if he connects with the victim then they'll get more information. Whereas with Dean, bleeding heart, open wound that he is, moments with victims are almost hyper empathetic, it's not logic that drives those moments it's pure emotion and because of that it feels more authentic. And yet Dean will often defer to Sam when it comes to talking to the victims, maybe even because Sam is able to be more logical and methodical, he doesn't need to tear himself open to convince people he just needs to read them and provide what they're looking for
