i am imagining a scenario (pre destiel getting together) where dean is venting to someone, maybe donna, about cas going off and doing something dangerous without talking to him about it. take your pick of which particular incident. and cas does this for a lot of reasons which mostly involve being raised in a military cult, but it still reads to dean as a rejection of equal partnership.

so he’s venting! and donna is like *minnesota accent* “well of course you’re mad! who wouldn’t be? if doug had been pulling that kind of nonsense he’d have been in the doghouse for sure!” to which dean sighs and responds, “he gives me those sad eyes and i always end up caving. and he’s an angel. it’s not like i can make him sleep on the couch for a week, the guy doesn’t even sleep!”

and they continue having their spa night and dean is caught up in the girl talk and relaxing and having fun so it’s not until he’s laying in bed that night trying to sleep that he notices. and then he spends 45 min staring at the ceiling thinking “why did i say that. even if he slept I couldn’t kick him out of bed. because he’d be in his own bed. obviously. also that’s crazy i’d never kick cas out of bed. why wouldn’t i want to be safe and protected and know exactly where cas was? in this hypothetical. that doesn’t even matter anyways because angels don’t sleep.”

and then he wakes up at 4am and is like “wait. donna implied cas is to me as doug was to her. and i didn’t correct her.” *several beats of silence* “hang on, she better have meant doug ii, that first guy was a piece of shit.”

Season 4 Destiel is mostly horror to me, because angels are horror and Dean is a pawn for Heaven and reaching for him in Hell wasn't a rescue but a campaign and Jimmy is trapped in his own body the whole time and until the very last moment Castiel might work FOR the Apocalypse…

But I also look at it the other way and do you ever feel your heart breaks a little because this is the first time in Castiel's life that everything is not about horror? There is a person, right here, who might understand him, who won't betray him for or against Heaven. A person who listens to his opinions and argues with him and protects him even when they disagree. A person who ends up pointing at Castiel's very own doubts and tells him to be true to himself.

Dean watches classic anime with Cas:

Dean: “No no, she’s calling him an idiot because she loves him, okay? That’s the trope. You know, like ‘Easily Resolvable Misunderstandings that Drive The Romance Plot,’ or the red string, or nosebleeds.”

Cas: “I fail to see how an insult relates to those other things.”

Dean: “Look, point is. She only said that because she was embarrassed.”

Cas: “So it’s contradictory. Like Nurse Piccolo in Dr. Sexy. ‘Brilliant coward.’”

Dean: “Exactly! And if you watch the next episode, she’ll say it when she’s worried, too, ‘cause she doesn’t want him to do anything stupid, like fight the baddie and get himself into danger. It’s the context.”

Cas: (small smile) “Hmm.”

Thinking about Dean and Cas retiring in a ranch, with Dean gathering cute and fluffy animals and Cas… gathering animals with poetic skills.

(They end up up animals who are not domesticated and not from America. They end up with animals from another time, lol)

There is a pond with many fish, at first, but the fish mysteriously disappear ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The thing is that Sam/Ruby is such a beautiful example of a toxic, abusive relationship but it gets ignored because of the "demon blood"

She manipulates him the entire time. She isolates him from his friends and family and makes him dependent on her. Then she reinforces the isolation every time he starts moving away from her by saying all these horrible things to him about how if he lets himself be controlled by someone (Dean) he's weak for doing so and that only by staying with her can he make himself strong and all the while she is undermining him.

If we focused less on the "drug addict" aspect of Sam's S4 storyline and more on the "he was the victim of domestic abuse" I think more people would be sympathetic to that arc.

(That being said, Sam absolutely killed human people in his pursuit of his blood addiction and he should have to take responsibility for those actions even though he was manipulated into starting down that path)
