Framing
I used to read a lot of FB groups that would critique member’s photography, and one of the big no-no’s was cutting limbs out of the frame. You could have the most stunning photo imaginable of a person, but if their arm was cut out of the frame, you were roundly chastised.
Screw that, though.
It seems like such a stupid thing to get hung up on. People are big and bold and dynamic and can’t be contained within a frame. There’s a world beyond the edge of the borders that they belong to. I’m just showing you a part that I see.

Learn and respect the rules but then break them. Rule of thirds is a guideline and one that has been around forever, but it’s only that - a guideline. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that your unique ability to see what others don’t is what will set you apart and make people pay attention.

You could go in the complete opposite direction, and use only a small part of the frame. I’ve never seen negative space as only meaning isolation or loneliness; it can be power and grace and possibility.

So you can use either “too much” or “too little” of a frame to tell a story. Just tell it your way, and people will respond. That’s your superpower. No one else has the ability to tell your story.
