Hi there! I saw that you are in a 6-year program, and I was wondering if you would mind telling us a little about the set up and the years of training/curriculum? I am in a 6-year program in the United States, so I'm very interested about learning how it's like in other places! P.S. - Congratulations on getting your MD! :)

Yeah sure sure I can do that. and thank you so much! :D 

Basically we don´t really need bachelors to get into medschool here.

So basically you go to medschool here - either general medicine or dentistry. These are two separate programs.

First three years are all about theory. You go to school five days a week and almost every day you have classes from 8:00 (ish) till 18:00 (ish). With theory, you also have to pass loads of lab classes. 

and I put the rest under the read more bc its a lot

So the first year you got:1. semester- - anatomy- biophysics- genetics- latin- P.E. (why??? I have no earthly idea)2. semester - - anatomy- genetics- histology and embryology- Latin- Medical chemistry (basically organic and inorganic chemistry mixed together)- Bioethics (urgh)- First aid- P.E.

Second year:1. semester-- anatomy- biochemistry- physiology- histology and embryology - P.E.2. semester- - biochemistry- physiology- microbiology- P.E.- basics of nursing (yes as future docs everyone had to pass classes and practice! it was really great)

Third year:1. semester- - introduction/propedeutics of Internal medicine- propedeutics of general surgery- microbiology- Pathology- Pathophysiology - Medical Ethics 2. Semester - - pharmacology- Internal medicine- propedeutics of general surgery- Pathology- Pathophysiology+ first hospital practice in IM and surgery (40hours+40hours)

Fourth year:1. semester-- pharmacology- Anesthesiology and intensive care- General Surgery- Internal Medicine- Medical Ethics- Neurology- Introduction into Pediatrics- Radiology and nuclear medicine- Denistry- Immunology - Emergency medicine (this one was not mandatory)2. semester - - Anesthesiology and intensive care- Public Health - Surgery- Internal Medicine- Immunology- Neurology- Introductions into Oncology- Pediatrics - Psychiatry - Social medicine- practice in IM and Surgery ( 80+80)- clinical immunology and alergology (not mandatory)- introduction into medical law (not mandatory)

Fifth year:1. Semester - - Dermatovenerology- Oncology - OBGYN- Surgery- Infectious diseases- Internal Medicine- Ophthalmology - othorinolaringology - Pediatrics- Psychiatry - Public health- Clinical genetics - Medical law (not mandatory)2. Semester - - Dermatovenerology - OBGYN- Surgery- Internal Medicine- Pediatrics- General medicine- Forensic medicine

Sixth year:- Graduation Thesis - Internal medicine+ state exam- Surgery + state exam- OBGYN + state exam- Pediatrics + state exam

So that´s it…now looking at it…it was A LOT. Of course with every class from derm thru psych to public health we also had mandatory clinical practice. For each specialty we had to attend certain number of shifts and also we were tested in theory and practice. For example in IM you had to learn how to read ECGs and stuff like that. But also before that, like for example in histo we had very (VERY) vigorous labs (wow I just got a very vivid flashback into organic chem…fricking loved me some organic chem). And in IM we also would have classes and practice in all sorts of specialties (in surgery too) like for example - hematology, endocrinology etc.

Hello! In the fall I'm going to be a bio major at my university. When I was applying to schools last fall, I applied for an accelerated 6-year B.A./M.D. program that my university offers. I applied, got an interview, but did not get accepted (700 people apply, 300 interview, 100 get accepted). My counselor told me that people from my school have applied, didn't get accepted, but then re-applied the fall of their freshman year and had better luck. I'm confused as to what I want to do. Help? :(

This is a tricky question that only you can answer. What I can offer is some behind-the-scenes info collected from friend who were in similar accelerated program.

The first thing to know is that these programs are all about the school's need to retain good medical school candidates for themselves. Their definition of 'good' means those who have already decided 100% that they want to be physicians AND have many reasons for staying at the institution (family and friends are all here, they are not interested in changing up too many things, they have strong ideas for what the future should hold for them, etc.). There is no shadow of doubt in their mind.

If you want to explore options or if you want/just so happen to have a more unknown future, a program like this will not be the best fit. If you'd like to discuss further, drop a line in my inbox and we can continue the conversation :)
