A few hours after they left Edgar’s house, Cameron was sitting on his very own couch with a cup of tea in his hand. He had convinced Mia to splash some bourbon in it, even though she hadn’t been happy about doing so. In the end, she was forced to admit that he probably deserved a drink, and so did she. Now they were facing each other from opposite ends of the sofa and sipping out of their respective tea cups.
She had pushed him to do a whole mess of strange tasks when they had first arrived. There was that thing with the mirror, and then she made him read his letters aloud (which he had to stop doing because he could barely breathe and she kept sobbing). The entire night had been too draining, emotionally and mentally. Cameron felt like he would pass out the moment she left him alone.
But he was having a moment of clarity, and he didn’t want to fall asleep and ruin it. He felt ridiculous for making such a scene earlier, but it had been a long time coming, and she had handled it so well. Mia was only a few feet away from him, and he couldn’t stop looking at her. If this was real (and he was now quite convinced that it was), he could stay here with her, if she would have him.
Cameron finished his tea. He wanted to talk to her, and touch her, and fix this. “Thank you for helping me.” His throat felt completely raw from the screaming and sobbing he had done earlier, which only increased the usual amount of gruffness in his voice. He probably should have had honey instead of bourbon. His gaze had shifted down to his empty cup -- he didn’t feel like he deserved to look at her anymore. “I would have been lost without you, Mia.”
