i don't have the vocabulary to describe what it's like, watching them. one moves and the other moves with him. it's a slight delay, but really perfectly timed, like there's this invisible rope linking them together and to just see them move, it's an experience. it's the little things, when they move in sync, that make you realize one is not whole without the other.

but like sam and when he's happy and content around dean, how he smiles at dean's dumb little jokes and he scoffs when dean says something silly, and it's that nice big bright smile too or when it's that sly little half smile oh man.

or like how maybe when sam was little, he was learning how to ride a bike using some kid from the neighborhood's bike and dean was down the block with some of the older kids playing cards or something. sam thought he was doing great and his friend was cheering him on until he hit a tree root, crashed and fell down on the gravel. scraped his knee and the palm of his hand and even a small scratch on his nose because he's all sorts of awkward, and it burns so he yells out in pain. Loud enough for dean to hear it, so dean runs to help sam starts laughing when he sees the twisted mess of limbs and bike. as he helps sam up he says things like, 'gonna have to put training wheels on if you really want to learn' and 'you might need a seatbelt next time.' sam, with big tears in his eyes and the stinging pain from the scrapes on his knee and hand and nose, just looks up at dean and gives him one of those smiles, you know, those special smiles just for dean, and dean's heart melts and it's instant fix-sam mode, starting with using the neighborhood kids bathroom to clean out the scrapes and then taking sam home to the motel they're staying at while dad's on a hunt, because it's getting late anyway.

once they're back at the motel and all settled, had dinner and now getting ready for bed, sam asks dean to tell him about mom so dean does. he tells this story about how she was beautiful and made the best pie and she was really nice and gave the best hugs. sam smiles at dean and leans forward on the bed and wraps him up in a big hug.

that's just one of the times sam says he loves dean, without actually saying i love you.

Sam Winchester could be sweating profusely and hanging off the side of a cliff with his nails digging into dirt and rock and have cuts and bruises all over his face, a split lip and his mouth open with the tiny tip of his tongue sticking out as he concentrates on not falling and a breeze would come by and blow his hair around swirling in his face and getting in his eyes and he would still be very attractive. The sun would probably shine on him and he'd just be this embodiment of sunshine and tragedy and grrrrr

Stanford. Sam. Drunk. Annoyed by the little mail icon on his stupid phone. It's a message from Dean. Probably a how are you are you being safe any hunts in the area blah blah blah. Not that Sam knows or cares. He's in college. Got Jess. Own place. Happy. Safe. Throats dry. Have another shot. Why does he even call anymore? Sam never answers. He should get it by now. Maybe he's just being stubborn. That's more Dad's thing. More Sam's thing. Ugh. Fuck that. Nothing like the man. Down another shot. Step outside for some fresh air. Fuck, it's cold. Windy too. Jess' at her friends house. Tonight it's just Sam and his guilt. He's not guilty. He's normal. He snorts. Pulls his sweatshirt tighter. Fucking October. Why is it so chilly tonight? Fuck. He misses Dean. Damnit. He fucking misses Dean, Dean's stupid leather jacket, his stupid mullet rock, stupid fucking smile but most of all he misses hearing "Sammy" being choked out, breathed out, screamed out like a prayer begging for forgiveness, safety and solace. He misses the shoulder bumping, the pats on the back, the "that's my boy."  He looks at his phone. Stupid little mail icon. Fuck it. He dials voicemail, only way to get it to disappear is to listen to it. The message starts out with the usual spiel.. how's school are you okay yada yada.. then Dean nearly whispers, Sammy. Sam's throat starts to close up and his chest tightens and he feels sick. "Sammy.. I.. look man I just want.. I just wanted to say that we.. I... miss you man." Click.
