more than likely, John was gone too long on a hunt (it does happen), and Dean didn't have enough money to buy food for Sam.
Yeah, I know it does happen. And it may have happened to our boys, maybe even more than once. I just think that's the easy way out, you know? Too easy. There's always more to the story.
Why would Dean be hesitant to tell Sam about it now? Why be dodgy when so much time has passed? What else happened or drove it to happening in the first place? It seems like there would be a major plot point behind it.
John isn't my favorite character, but I just hate seeing him villainized so much. :(
