Will Wright talks about game's unique features
Main points from interview:
1. The game being discussed is called Spore, and the speaker is excited about playing it and exploring its different stages.
Quote: "I was really excited about getting a chance to play that because you know we've seen the Creator so many times that I was more curious about how's the game coming together."
2. The game features a timeline that represents the progression through different stages of evolution, from cellular to tribal to civilization to space.
Quotes: "The timeline really helped me get my head around what was happening in the game." "The timeline represents the progression through the different stages of spores, kind of this epic journey."
3. The game allows players to shape the cultural personality of their species as they progress through each level.
Quotes: "The things that you are doing at every level are kind of changing your cultural personality." "You're kind of programming the personality of your culture as you play each level."
4. The game has been designed to be accessible and not overwhelming, with strategic possibilities balanced by the design team.
Quote: "We brought in Soren Johnson, who did the last Civ game, and he's the one that's really been shepherding the tuning in the design for the civilization game."
5. Each level of the game has different goals and accomplishments, ranging from individual to social achievements.
Quotes: "Every level has a very different goal state." "They kind of move from fairly individual accomplishments to more social accomplishments."
6. The space game level offers the most possibilities and can be played almost infinitely, with various goals and meta-games to pursue.
Quotes: "The space game is probably at least as large as all the other levels put together." "The game just opens up into a lot of different meta-games you can choose to pursue."
7. The creature creator in the game underwent multiple rewrites and redesigns to ensure it is entertaining and intuitive.
Quotes: "The creature creator has probably gone through maybe like 10 total rewrites." "We put a lot of AI into the creature creator."
8. The game allows players to share and access user-generated content, with options to subscribe to favorite content creators and customize their game experience.
Quotes: "Players can subscribe to buddy lists of their favorite friends whose content will come into the game." "They can also tag content, and the most popular tags bubble up to the top level."
9. The speaker emphasizes that every game in Spore will be unique and different, with unexpected and entertaining moments.
Quotes: "Every game is going to be very, very different when people play it." "There are things that I, as the designer, didn't know about until I saw in the game."
Overall, the interview highlights the accessible and diverse nature of the game Spore, with its evolutionary progression, varied gameplay, user-generated content, and unexpected experiences.
Spore Beta Demonstration @ E3 2006 by Will Wright
Hey check out this Spore trailer I just found! It's made a lot closer to the final release of the game, but it's still quite obviously differs significantly. The creature creation seems to be finalized, but the cell stage has a few cells in it that aren't anywhere in the final game!
Spore 2006 full size screenshots
Watching the GDC 2005 Spore presentation because I'm a self-hating autistic person and I cannot STOP THINKING about how he starts off in the ocean
Swimming around in the murky depths in a way that terrifies me so. In an environment that should have AT LEAST been part of an expansion pack post-release
And then mister Will Wright puts legs on that shit....
AND THEN WALKS OUT OF THE OCEAN INTO THE REGULAR CREATURE STAGE???? Like it's fucking nothing. The game should not have been shipped without this.
