Now, Smee hadn’t originally intended to get involved in this business. He didn’t often go hunting these days, instead trading in the trophies of others. But Hook seemed to think it was worth investigating, and perhaps he was right. It was possible, after all, that this could be the work of the crocodile. Marie had been by the lake when the attack happened. Perhaps they could find the crocodile right under their noses in Swynlake!

He was less thrilled, however, when D’Avenant suggested Smee pair off with this youth. Nothing against young people, of course— but Smee didn’t expect them to have much experience with these things. That was the trouble with this generation. They were far too soft. And Smee really just wanted to work with Hook. They worked well together, after all.

But then again, the youth would never learn if no one ever taught him, and Smee had to maintain his reputation anyway of being agreeable. So he didn’t argue with D’Avenant— he just promised himself that he would talk to Hook later about potentially investigating together on their own.

“Right then, you can call me Smee— and this is Squeaky, she’s the best sporter around,” Smee said, offering a hand to shake and then gesturing to Squeaky, who sat patiently at Smee’s feet, ready to go. “You’re called Milo, D’Avenant said?”
