One day the sun turns deep blue. It still shines and the days are still bright, but light is now different. The number of supernatural spottings increases.

There's a very scientific way to explain all this. There's also a very simple way to explain all this: It's all Spiderman's fault.
Working at Alchemax was...well, it was supposed to be a dream. Johnathan was meant to be working on some of the most cutting-edge technology in proto-sciences; studying possible methods of time travel, feasible and ethical studies of mind control, and, of course, the study of parallel universes and wormholes into completely new dimensions.
It's all a bit far-fetched to his parents who still don't really understand how he's making a living— they're just thrilled he got his doctorate in the sciences and has a job with benefits. Or had. He had a job with benefits. He was brought on to Dr. Octavius' team, working with some...benefactor who was funding their project— the Super Collider! It sounded super! And if successful, they would be able to potentially study other dimensions and universes— maybe even travel to them!
He couldn't really boast about the project to his family, seeing as he signed an NDA, and he...he sort of lost what little social life he had seeing as the project and the benefactor both demanded near-constant attention. He slept in the lab sometimes. He survived off Red Bull and motivational sayings for months. At one point his boss told him he had to clean up— and maybe cut his hair or something, he looked like a caveman.
Johnathan hadn't minded the long hair and beard bit until Dr. Octavius said the same thing— and she was the big time. A renowned and respected scientist...and if he ever wanted to get on her good side and maybe get a good reference once this project was done, he might want to do as she said.
He had his new look for about a week before something...happened/ In fact, something he had been wondering about for some time— a few bits and bobs had come through the unstable portals they were able to create with the Super Collider. One being a spider. A big...brightly colored spider that...well, it was really freaky actually. Johnathan was pleased when it was caught and contained in the laboratory stocks...until it escaped somehow. And bit someone.
It's a long story but the potential for a citizen getting a spider bite rash was the least of their problems. All Johnathan knows is that one day, the spider is mentioned again, and now the Super Collider was involved and some kid who now went around calling himself Spiderman— which, honestly? Didn't make much sense. Spider Teen? Sure. Man? Hardly. Also, what work was done there? Spiderman...the man with the powers of a spider— it's not exactly winning any marketing awards, is it?
And! He threw a bagel at him! What sort of superhero is that!?
In the midst of his own annoyance over this not even caped crusader, Johnathan only manages to get himself into more trouble. Like, accidentally being the one guy left in the middle of the Super Collider's beam when Spiderman decides to destroy the whole thing— honestly, it was bad enough being hit by that beam. The sound nearly burst his eardrums and the light— it felt like his eyes were about to be burned in their sockets.
And then it turns out that, maybe both of those things happened. He certainly doesn't know, seeing as he woke up WITHOUT EARS OR A NOSE OR EVEN EYES! He has NO clue how he's seeing anything right now. All he has is a generic...humanoid shape...and HOLES! Just these...these ridiculous holes! This is so NOT fair. Nuh uh! He was finally crawling up that corporate ladder, he was going to get an award for being part of this team. He was going to head up his OWN lab one day— no one is going to let you run a lab when you are made up of HOLES.
