It’s been some time since Palm Equipment had a rand based skirt in the range and it’s something that Palm followers have been crying out for. Not wanting to disappoint they have developed the new Palm Equipment Orbit Spray Skirt.

Staying Dry, if not stylish

The weather is nothing if not changeable at the moment. Normally I have my Carradice Duxback cycling cape packed safely in my panniers for this sort of weather, and very good it is too (though I confess I’m still not entirely sure how you are meant to indicate in it).   Unfortunately, you can pretty much guarantee the day it actually rains when you actually need to be cycling you won’t have it with you.

 Because I ride a ladies sit-up-and-beg bike, the worst thing about a downpour is getting very wet thighs - as they create a lovely flat tabletop for rain to collect on, and then roll down over your knee as you pedal down. Faced with a 45-minute cycle with nothing but a pair of slightly-too-see-through American Apparel leggings between me and the elements, this week I created what I’m calling a DIY sit-up-and-beg cycling spray deck.  

You need a standard supermarket carrier bag (I'd think that one of the heavy duty M&S ones that you pay 5p for would be best, but who has one of those in a hurry?)

Laying the bag flat, make two cuts on one side (inside of the handles), down from the top of the bag to the crease - leaving the handles intact.

Use a belt (or a piece of string) around your waist, and tuck the long end of the plastic bag over the top of the belt and down your front (leave yourself enough room for it to slip out if you need to get off your bike in a hurry, but be careful that it's not so loose that it can slip free and tie itself up in your wheels, leading to certain injury).

Hook the handles of the bag over your handlebars - adjust the length of your "deck" so that it is comfy and not baggy (if it is sagging and your knees touch it as you ride, the rain will seep through the anti-suffocation holes and you'll get wet legs anyway).

Disclaimer: I wouldn't go so far as to say that this kept me dry - more that I got wet more slowly. It lasted a 45-minute cycle in moderate to heavy rain, though it did have some comedy dribbles and leaks. It's not undergone a scientific test as there wasn't another one of me riding without it to measure against, but I felt like it kept me drier. I can't comment on whether it kept shoes dry as that part of the non-experiment was rendered void by an encounter with a fast moving taxi and a largish puddle. I also looked like a bit of an idiot with a supermarket carrier bag tied round my waist, but I tried to imagine that people's funny looks were merely envy.
