Inuit Works of Art from SPRI
Woman with Baby in Hood. Carved in soapstone by Akeeaktashuk (1898-1954)
Left. Polar Bear and Walrus. Both carved in soapstone by Henry Evaluardjuk (1923-2007) Right. Owl Standing on Seal. Unknown Artist.
A variety of works carved in bone, horn, and ivory. Those in the Right image are Tupilaat carved by several artists including Soren Pipps, Vitus Ignatusen, and Anders Kilime.
My First Ski-doo Ride. Carved in soapstone by Napachie Sharky (b. 1971)
I wish I'd been able to photograph this work better because it was perhaps my favourite thing in the whole museum. The detail and skill of the carving itself is one thing but the playful, evocative nature of the piece is another thing entirely, and the way Sharky has chosen to depict modern life in this more traditional art form is another thing still. <3
Hunter and Seal. Carved in soapstone by Johnny Pilurtuut (b.1928)
This is another work that I particularly enjoyed for its details - the hunter's clothing and expression, and particularly the pattern of the seal's coat.
And finally, I can't lie, I enjoyed this carving hugely for just how absurdly tiny and cute it is! The artist appears to be unknown for this one also.

I found this site - Katilvik - to be a really useful resource as I was looking further into the works of some of these artists so I'll share that here too.
Seems others have posted pics from SPRI so I hope it’s okay to share mine. Things that made me happy / emotional: JCR’s pocket sun compass; model of Erebus; FE search balloon; replica of James Caird; tiny Inuit bird given to Edward Parry; FE silverware. Also enjoyed the barrel organ from Parry’s voyages being described as the “iPod of its time”.
Finally finally visited the Scott Polar!
(alt has info on all photos)
(yes it did take me several months to visit somewhere 5 mins away from my parents' house but in my defense I was at uni or on holiday for a lot of that)
