Interview with Bioluminescent
We got with the author of Res Ipsa Loquitur to get a little insight on the story and the author!
QUESTION 1: What inspired you to write this story?
ANSWER: I have always loved tv shows and movies about lawyers and the law, so I felt like it was about time I tried my hand in it. I was particularly inspired by the show Silks, and really liked the dynamic between the two main characters and the setting the story took place in, in the London court system. Cecily’s character was one that I’d wanted to try for a while, a grittier character who isn’t always likeable, and I was also interested in exploring the dynamic of two characters who shared a history outside of the narrative of the story, experimenting with how to incorporate that. And that’s how it all came together.
QUESTION 2: How much research did you do before you started to write?
ANSWER: A LOT. So much, I read so many dry law journals that I hardly understood just to make sure I had the right terminology. I know that most of my readers probably wouldn’t need the minutiae of the legal system to enjoy Cecily and Liam’s story, but as it is with all my AUs, I like tying in as much authenticity into the story as I can. Every chapter involved a bit of research into something – case law, terminology, even just google maps of all the places they were – but it was part of what made RIL so enjoyable to write.
QUESTION 3: How did Cecily decide to become a barrister (public defender)?
ANSWER: It’s alluded to in the story that she became instantly hooked on the profession after a class trip to a courtroom to see a case being tried. She sort of fell in love with the job then. And then she threw herself into it, dedicated all her time to being the best of the best in her field. Having the respect of so many of her peers and being acknowledged as a force to be reckoned with in her job became a big part of her identity.
QUESTION 4: How would you compare Cecily and Liam’s relationship from the beginning of the fic to how it is now?
ANSWER: A complete turnaround! On Cecily’s part at least. I think Liam is probably just relieved that he doesn’t have to pine for her anymore now that things are out in the open. But Cecily had to confront a lot of obstacles she’d put between herself and her own happiness before she could accept Liam’s feelings for her; sort of like she had to love herself before she could let someone else love her, I guess.
QUESTION 5: What has been the hardest scene you have had to write for this fic?
ANSWER: The scene when Liam first finds out about the baby in the movie theatre. Liam’s reaction to that news was crucial for the story and it involved a lot of push and pull, trying to figure out exactly how he would act in that situation. I rewrote it about ten times before I felt it was right.
QUESTION 6: Where can readers discover more about you?
ANSWER: Either of my blogs, I guess. I’m always open to talking about anything and everything with whoever cares to indulge me in a little conversation.
