Spring Checked Dress, or Wowza Ready to Wear

This drawing by Howard Steel of a cotton checked dress from 1957 comes from the New York Public Library. It was one of the designs offered by Creators Studios, a New York City Seventh Avenue fashion business that marketed ready-to-wear designs to clothing manufacturers across the country. Yes, that is right. Not couture but ready-to-wear that you could buy in a department store.  It gives you some idea of why ready-to-wear cost more back then and why women had smaller, more interesting wardrobes than we do today.

Although made of humble cotton, this dress has many details to mark it as formal clothing for public, daywear in the 1950s. There are the contrast collar and cuffs in white, which have the same buttonings. Then the bias-cut insets at the waist were meant to drawing attention to a small waist also marked by a skinny black belt. I daresay the buttons on these insets were non-functional, and yet notice they were given buttonholes anyway. 

This is drawn with the full accessories that marked public clothing: heels, shoes, hat and fabric rose. Although this design is decades old, I think it would still look good on a city street today.
