Something by way of an introduction
I am a 31 yr old homebrewer in the DC area currently. I originally started this hobby as a way to pass time during graduate school in Cincinnati and fell thoroughly in love with it. Honestly, few are the hobbies that are so wonderfully drinkable. I've been brewing since 2007 and since then have accumulated a fair amount of equipment, some of which I've made myself in true homebrewer style.
This bog will focus on what I'm making at any given time. There shall be pictures, descriptions of brewing during its different stages and occasional reviews of the brews I drink. I'm also trying to visit more breweries, so as that happens, I'll post those reviews as well.
As it happens, I also enjoy brewing coffee and tea as well as mead/wine/cider making. Don't be surprised if some of that crops up. Also don't be surprised if the format for this blog shifts a tad from time-to-time. I'm still learning the tumblrs.
Recent brews have included, but are not limited to:
An extract Belgian Strong amped up apple juice from my uncles (small, but mighty) orchard.
An All-Grain Spruce Ale made from West Virginia spring water and West Virginia Spruce (It was a bit of a trek for those ingredients).
A small batch Spiced Saison with heather and rye (happily sitting in secondary as I type).
Thank you all for visiting. I echo the great Charlie Papazian and invite you to stop by, relax, don't worry, have a homebrew.
****Disclaimer****
It is my understanding that at this point, homebrewing is legal in all 50 states in the USofA with specific limitations for individuals 21 yrs of age and older. Even so, I highly recommend that if you choose to take up this hoppy (and it's pretty great) that you check for any local/state or federal restrictions that may apply. And stay safe.
171/366 Spruce Ale. Or, what would happen if they turned that pine air freshener into a beer. It's delicious. (Taken with Instagram)
Old Tjikko Spruce Ale (Arbor Brewing Company)
A subtle piney aroma lost mostly to fruitiness. Similar in the taste with mild bitterness and a slightly resinous mouthfeel. Pretty good.
