whats the square theory... is it big feelings gang where they all are in happy polyam like (like bc the twins eww and also macs gay) but like not romantic just. affectionate bros and hug pals.... thats what i want tbh...

good guess, but no! square theory is something that i’ve been thinking about within the past few days as a way of like.... visualizing and understanding the relationships between the gang. (it doesn’t include frank, mostly because i don’t think frank’s relationships with the gang are symmetrical)

you caught me off guard, so i don’t have a big post of it yet, but i drew this really quickly to hopefully explain the gist of square theory to you!

basically if you put the gang (minus frank) down on four points like this, they each have symmetrical relationships to one another, thus forming a square.

it’s mostly just a visual/framing tool for me personally to think about relationships and parallels within the gang but maybe you guys will find square theory cool on its own too!

I’d thought about this sometimes in a vague way, but never crystallized the theory the way it’s done here. Nice to have all the work done and just read it and enjoy. I’ll be watching for more squares in the wild from here on out.

My Opinion on the Square

Everyone is so concerned about the difference between how lucas feels for both of the girls when I feel like we should be thinking about the difference between how the girls feel for lucas. I think riley likes the IDEA of lucas, not him as a person whereas Maya likes him for who he is and not for what she wants out of him. I think that the whole square dance theory by @theowldetective displays this perfectly because if riley would take the time to step back and look at what she wants it would be Farkle she was pining after instead of lucas.

Riley is so in love with the idea of cory and Topanga that she has conceptualized them as her idea of love and refuses to accept any other form. Lucas was her first crush and she thinks that that means he is her Cory, but she doesn’t seem to understand that she isn’t Topanga. Farkle has been on the side line watching riley and lucas for three years and has accepted that riley doesn’t reciprocate his love for her, but continues to love her all the same. He has helped her grow and accept that she is her own person and I think that that will be key.

Maya has spent at least a confirmed year fighting her feelings for lucas because she thinks he belongs with her best friend. She has fought herself for so long that I don’t think she truly understands what she feels anymore. She knows that she likes him, but she is terrified of what that means. Riley is the one person she loves more than anything in the world and if liking lucas means that she hurts riley, she is willing to let him go for her.

I think that riley needs to realize that lucas isn’t cory and she isn’t Topanga before this whole square can be resolved and the only way she can do that is to experience it for herself and prove it once and for all.
