initial reactions of off campus show adaptation changes I disliked, felt indifferent towards, and liked below the cut (obvious spoilers ahead)
- probably the biggest gripe I have with the show okay the Garrett Graham I know loves hockey, and I understand making him have an identity crisis and questioning everything about himself compared to Phil, but making him think about quitting hockey felt so wrong and out of character for him it pissed me off
- the “tutoring” kiss being switched from Dean to Logan (I get why we did it narratively and it’s obviously not that big of a deal but I love that scene so much in the book I’m allowed to be slightly sad about it)
- the lack of one direction (Justin’s band sang Kiss You which was a cute nod but I wish we had gotten more)
- the lack of playlist sharing
- no Breaking Bad marathon :( (we had them watch YouTube videos and dirty dancing instead which was cute but I love the binge marathon so it made me a little sad but I will live)
- Logan’s mom (probably still too early to tell, but my initial reaction to all of Logan’s family drama is that I like the book story for him a lot more. I’m trying to keep an open mind, but so far not loving it)
changes I was indifferent to:
- I don’t mind the age tampering and really liked what they did with Tucker’s character for the Friendsgiving episode especially
- Justin’s character (he annoyed me a lot at times especially towards the end but the changes fit the narrative and I liked the way the song writing ended so I accept the change)
- campus wide hands off (I loved it in the book for a book boyfriend moment in 2015 but appreciate the acknowledgment that it was toxic and icky so I’m glad we got the nod to it but not the reality of it)
- Hunter Davenport (again, I feel like it’s obviously way too early to make an actual judgement, but I love Hunter’s character and these new layers with the show’s storyline have me intrigued to say the least)
- Logan’s crush (I saw people wanting it to be removed but I feel like it’s crucial to his character and I appreciated that he was the one who knew who Hannah was and called Garrett for not remembering her and suddenly being interested. I also like that he kept it lowkey and didn’t make a thing of it but was still very much silently pining so I’m excited to see how it affects the Grace of it all)
- THE NEW YORK DRIVE WITH BEAU DEAN AND ALLIE (Beau and Allie brotp for fucking life it is going to hurt so bad when Beau leaves us)
- the entire drunk Shakespeare scene (this wasn’t so much a change as an addition but god it was good and the Allie and Dean of it all had me giddy)
- Dean “Down Bad” Heyward-Di Laurentis every second he was on my screen (I always have been and always will be a Dean girly and they’re giving me hope we won’t have the “Dean is a complete and total dick to Sabrina” plot which would be fucking wonderful please)
- Hannah’s advisor (I need that man to give me an hour a week to help me get my life together plz I loved that man)
- multiple storylines at once!!!!!!!! (this doesn’t really count as a change but it is soooooo nice that we got part of Dean and Allie now instead of doing the “each season is one book” formula. It works so well too bc these couples are so interconnected that we get to have dynamics between them all be shown simultaneously and it’s still flowing well)
