DAY 117: Lovinā, Touchinā, Squeezinā by Journey

Journey has probably made more than half of their career earnings off of Donāt Stop Believinā alone, in fact I would go as far as saying that a large part of Journeyās career legacy is attributed to Donāt Stop Believinā. That song is like Americaās second national anthem; itās staying power has stood the test of time and it isnāt fading away any time soon. Just go to any karaoke bar, youāll see what I mean. The worst part about a great band having a massive hit is the rest of their library tends to pale in comparison regardless of whether or not the hit is objectively better than the rest of the content. Most times it isnāt, the song just gathers popularity and explodes from there. If all you know of San Francisco legends Journey is Donāt Stop Believinā, donāt feel bad. Be excited that thereās more out there in the Journey discography that rocks even harder! Over their history, Journey have indeed been on quite the journey in its personnel, sporting a cavalcade of members since their inception in 1973. Surprisingly, even Randy Jackson of American Idol fame found himself in the mix of musicians over the years (although it was only for an album). However, the Journey that has been beloved by millions all starts with the addition of lead vocalist Steve Perry starting from their fourth album Infinity, which contains the Journey staple Wheel in the Sky. Steve Perryās combination of passionate soul and bellowing rock in his vocals combine to fit the mood in any song that the band decides to play, and helped propel Journey into the mainstream through the end of the 70ā²s and early 80ā²s. In my opinion, some of Journeyās best material before their release Escape in 1981 which contained Donāt Stop Believinā. Specifically, their fifth album Evolution has a myriad of different styles to keep fans appeased all throughout the album. My favorite happens to be this bluesy slow jam about infidelity and revenge Lovinā, Touchinā, Squeezinā. Straining the vocal capabilities of Steve Perry, this song dips down into Steveās sultry lower register to coincide with the typical blues beat and piano phrases, building intensity towards the climax of the song where Perry is full on belting out each high note with majesty and grace. The crushing blow of an unfaithful relationship is felt in the emotion of Perryās performance, while the redemption in getting back at an unfaithful partner feels so sweet as Perry teases in sing-song to end the song. If you are limited in your knowledge of Journeyās accomplishments, I implore that you take a deeper dive into the finer works of the band that still lives on today, even without Steve Perry. Theyāve since found a vocalist that sounds almost exactly like Steve, so the Journey spirit continues to live!
