The visual changes on the 2024 Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport are concentrated on the front end. They both feature a pair of larger headlights connected by an LED bar above the illuminated VW emblem (standard on all models except the base trims), with the outer shape of the clusters sending some Ford Expedition vibes. These new lighting units, along with the enlarged grille and interconnected bumper intakes, distinguish the US-spec SUVs from the related Chinese VW Terramont and Terramont X.

Two-motor hybrid system

The updates to the CR-V Hybrid's two-motor hybrid system start with a more powerful electric traction motor, which now outputs 181 horsepower on its own and 247 pound-feet of torque. That's 15 lb-ft more than last year, yielding a small but noticeable boost in throttle response. The extra grunt is most apparent on initial tip-in, but thanks to a small maximum rev increase, the electric assist sticks around higher in the powerband

Toyota’s engineers have fitted the GR HiLux with a new turbocharger and bespoke new fuel-injection mapping to up the 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine’s outputs from the usual 150kW/500Nm to 165kW at 3000rpm and 550Nm at 2800rpm, marking a 10 per cent bump in both power and torque.

These are the same outputs as seen in South Africa’s HiLux GR Sport and make Toyota Australia’s new flagship ute the most powerful diesel HiLux variant to date (bettered only by the 2008-09 TRD HiLux with its supercharged 225kW/453Nm 4.0-litre petrol V6).

The standard 2023 Toyota Corolla model has a 2.0-liter cylinder engine, which generates 169 horsepower. Additionally, the Corolla offers a hybrid powertrain with an output of up to 134 horsepower.

Engine options for the standard 2023 Honda Civic model include a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (158 horsepower) and a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine (180 horsepower). Also, the sporty Civic Si features another variant of the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, which generates 200 horsepower. Unlike the Corolla, the Civic doesn’t offer an all-wheel drive system.

Additionally, for elevated performance, both the Corolla and Civic offer “hot hatches” with the first-ever GR Corolla and the redesigned Civic Type R. The GR Corolla has a 1.6-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 300 horsepower. In comparison, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine in the Civic Type R generates 315 horsepower.

We expect the 2023 RAV4 could be due for a round of minor cosmetic changes, possibly a reworking of the front grille and shape of the headlights and taillights. Again, it's not going to be a radical difference, though Toyota doesn't need to do anything extreme to keep the RAV4 at the top of the compact SUV market.

As with the updated Xpander, the 2023 Xpander Cross packs no powertrain changes under the hood. It’s still the same 1.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 103 hp at 6,000 RPM and 141 Nm of torque at 4,000 RPM. It pairs with a CVT, a contrast to the somewhat archaic four-speed automatic transmission that’s present on the local model.

Interestingly, Mitsubishi fitted the 2023 Xpander Cross with active yaw control, a feature that first appeared on the fourth-generation Lancer Evolution. It’s essentially a dynamic stability control system that controls the driving and braking forces between the left and right wheels. It’s currently unclear whether #mitsubushi this feature will make it to international versions of the Xpander Cross. #mitsubishi

With the 2023 Mitsubishi Xpander Cross now in Indonesia, it seems like only a matter of time before the new model arrives in the Philippines. We wouldn’t be surprised if #Mitsubishi Philippines decides to bring this vehicle in this year, perhaps as soon as this September at the Philippine International Motor Show. When the new Xpander Cross does land in the country, expect it to carry a price tag of around P1.3 million.
