SS Beaver driveshaft, Monday 5 November 1962
The SS Beaver was the first steamship to operate in the Pacific Northwest. It ran from 1836 until 1888 when the inebriated crew crashed it at Prospect Point in Stanley Park. There are still remains of the Beaver off Stanley Park, but they are now protected and can’t lawfully be removed.

pacific steamer beaver postmarked 5 may 1918
the sender appears to have been enlisted in wwi, and in 1918 was one of the 2,500 soldiers training at fort stevens. the fort is at the mouth of the columbia river, near astoria; the beaver would pass by it regularly. just two months after this card was sent, the beaver was requisitioned by the navy for use in the war.
