SSD Heaven?!
Last year I bought into the SSD hype and bought a Crucial 128GB SSD drive for a laptop I bought back in 2006. This thing was a dog -- only 2GB of ram and I had installed Windows 7 and it crawled.
Popped in my new SSD, re-loaded Windows, and it was honestly like I had a brand new laptop. Boots cold faster than any machine I've ever had, Office loads in a snap, Outlook is almost instant. I was in heaven, even if I had to think about what I was installing due to the reduced capacity.
Then I read this article from someone I respect, and I got a little freaked out. So I implemented a complete backup solution on my home network so in case my beauty does fail I can be up and running again quickly. But I started looking at other options.
I use virtual machines a lot on an external e-sata cable and I wanted to try out the new seagate hybrid drives to see if they work. I found a great deal on the Seagate Momentus XT 500GB and decided the capacity was nice and worth a try.
My reaction with my virtual machines was almost the same as with my full SSD drive, only now I have huge capacity and not quite as worried about the skittish factor.
So, yes, I'm a big believer in SSDs - and especially when paired in a novel hybrid fashion the way Seagate has done with their Momentus line. Big thumbs up from this geek.
